NASELLE — A youthful Naselle Comet softball team will debut a deep new class of players while competing for the league crown this season.

“We have a large number of girls that just love the game of softball,” said Naselle head coach Rebekah Wirkkala. “The players are eager to work hard and play ball.”

Naselle will have 20 on the roster this season, approximately the same as last year. The team will play multiple junior varsity games in addition to varsity, when possible.

Wirkkala has been encouraged by a talented and deep upcoming class

“We have eight eighth graders this season. Most have played softball since they were little and a few play year round,” Wirkkala said. “Avrey Ford and Jessie Smith have played a lot of fastpitch and will contribute to varsity, and Baylee Lopez will be seeing innings on the mound. Avery Ruch, Addie Dalton, Kaitlyn Steenerson, Nevaeh Ruch and Cheyenne Metcalf are also newcomers that work hard and we are excited about all of them playing the game they love.”

The Naselle Comets softball team has had to settle for second place in the 1B Coastal League the past two seasons while watching league rival Mossyrock raise the trophy both times. The Vikings are again anticipated to be the Comets’ toughest test.

“We will be a young, talented group overall this season,” Wirkkala said.

“There are quite a few girls battling out spots on the field. Healthy competition is great for building programs. Kendall and I, along with volunteers Regan Wirkkala and Hailey Lopez, are excited for this group to show their skill and what they’ve got!”

Up next: Naselle will open the season on the road against Raymond/South Bend on Friday, March 15.
