- The Bayside Singers are looking forward to performing Broadway hits and seek new members.
OCEAN PARK — Following two successful Christmas concerts, Bayside Singers, an Ocean Park-based choral group, is preparing for a new singing season, and members have been focusing on seeking new singers. Practice for the new season will begin on Jan. 26, and take place each Friday from 2 to 4 p.m., at Ocean Park Lutheran Church on U Street, leading up to spring concerts on May 11 and 18.
Although the group has regained many of the singers they lost due to the pandemic, they are still seeking new singers in all parts. Larger numbers of singers would give the group more flexibility and the opportunity to explore music requiring special strength in specific areas.
December’s Christmas concerts were entertaining and well attended, and took place under the direction of Sue Wasienko, with the accompaniment provided by Ferrell Hornsby. Both women began working with the chorale in September 2022, after moving to the Peninsula early in the summer. They hold degrees in music, and have many years of experience performing with a wide range of singing groups, as well as in teaching music and singing to students of all ages.
This spring’s concerts will feature a number of Broadway tunes and pieces from movies, but the group has often sung classical, gospel, and popular music as well.
Anyone who wants to sing a wide variety of musical styles and genres is welcome to join Bayside Singers. No auditions are required, and no public performance experience or formal musical training is necessary. While many of the singers read music, many do not. The group is composed primarily of retired or semi-retired people, who enjoy singing, and are willing to attend rehearsals and pay dues of $20 per month. Younger people are welcome, if they have flexible schedules that allow them to attend afternoon rehearsals.
Bayside Singers is a qualified non-profit organization, and does not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation, although covid vaccinations are required. Anyone interested in participating may contact Bayside Singers’ president, Kathy Hanna, at 360-244-1827, or vice president Denise Cox at 360-581-4395.
