Ilwaco senior Xavier Smith enjoyed two wins to place first in the 113-pound division at the Phil White Classic Wrestling Meet in Clatskanie last Thursday.
Teammate Blake Bell went 2-2 for fourth place in the same weight class.
Jace Linthakhan, in the smallest 106-pound division, also ended the day with a 2-2 record, as did Oscar Gustafson, who placed fourth at 126 pounds.
Cody Miller at 138 and Zech Taylor at 150 each tallied one win on the Oregon trip.
Next the Ilwaco boys will divide up for Jan. 6 meets. Castle Rock will host one from each weight class, with the rest heading to North Beach.
The Ilwaco girls headed to a holiday tournament in Puyallup, only the second meet of the season with a full squad. Two freshmen wrestled in the varsity brackets with Abigail Doan going 2-2 at 105 pounds and Bailey Womack 1-2 at 125 pounds, losing one match in sudden-death overtime. Six squad members wrestled in the JV competition, with Ophelia Wise winning the 110-pound division and teammate Kaylee Anderson placing third. Angel Salas won the 235-pound division.
“We lacked stamina in majority of matches that ultimately cost the girls the wins allowing competitors to regain control by either score or pins,” said head coach Frank Womack, who has a plan for improvement.
Next for the girls is a Kelso two-day tournament Friday that attracts competition from around the nation as wrestlers compete in 64-person brackets.
