Sports Roundup: Naselle boys best Ilwaco in ‘Bear River Battle’

Naselle boys basketball

The Naselle boys basketball team improved to 6-1 on the season after besting Ilwaco (5-3) 68-58 in the Bear River Battle on Friday.

The Comets were led by sophomore Jacob Lindstrom, who scored a game-high 29 points, including four three-pointers in the final period that buried any Ilwaco hopes for a comeback.

The Comets stretched their winning streak to five games with the win, including victories over CAA (46-42), Firm Foundation (74-36), South Bend (76-29) and Lake Quinault (80-42).

The Comets, currently 3-1 in league play, remain in fourth place in a highly competitive 1B Columbia Valley League, trailing Willapa Valley (4-0), Mossyrock (4-0) and Pe Ell (3-1).

Up next: Naselle will host Morton/White Pass (3-6) on Thursday, Dec. 28 in Naselle.

Ilwaco boys basketball

After reeling off four straight wins, the Ilwaco boys basketball team (5-3) fell to Naselle 68-58 in a non-league game last week. Ilwaco senior Beckett Turner scored a team-high 25 points before fouling out in the second half.

The Fishermen remain in first place at 3-0 in 2B Pacific League play, followed by Forks (3-1), Chief Leschi (3-1) and Raymond (3-2).

Up next: Ilwaco will next host Stevenson (4-1) on Friday, Dec. 29 in Ilwaco.

Raymond/South Bend girls basketball

The Raymond/South Bend Ravens girls basketball team (6-3) split their games last week, including a convincing 53-9 victory over Willapa Valley before dropping a 43-32 decision to Elma. The Ravens, currently 3-2 in league play, remain in third place, behind first-place Ilwaco and second-place Forks.

Up next: Raymond/South Bend will next host Naselle (3-4) in a pivotal league matchup on Thursday, Dec. 28.

Raymond boys basketball

The Raymond boys basketball team climbed to 5-3 on the season after collecting two wins last week, including victories over North Beach (3-6) 57-54 and Willapa Valley (5-3) 72-53. In the matchup against North Beach, Raymond junior Chris Quintana scored a game-high 22 points.

Up next: Raymond will host Muckleshoot Tribal (5-3) on Thursday, Dec. 28.

South Bend boys basketball

The South Bend boys basketball team slipped to 0-5 on the season after falling to Naselle 76-29 and Chief Leschi 86-38 last week.

Up next: South Bend will host Onalaska (2-5) Thursday, Dec. 28 in South Bend.

Willapa Valley boys basketball

After recording four straight wins, the Willapa Valley boys basketball team (5-3) fell to Raymond 72-53 last Friday.

The Vikings, currently 4-0 in league play, remain in first place in the 1B Columbia Valley League, followed by Mossyrock, Pe Ell and Naselle.

Up next: Willapa Valley (5-3) will take on King’s Way Christian in a tournament game Friday, Dec. 29.

Willapa Valley girls basketball

The Willapa Valley girls basketball team’s winning streak was halted at seven games last week, after the Vikings were dealt a 52-22 setback to Toledo and a 53-9 loss to Raymond/South Bend.

The Vikings, currently 3-0 in league play and 7-3 overall, remain in first place in the 1B Columbia Valley League.

Up next: Willapa Valley will have a short holiday break before returning to action against Naselle (3-4) on Wednesday, Jan. 3 in Naselle.
