Letter: A terse interaction at port

I would like to respond to the letter from Randall Lofstrom on the port shenanigans. We have not tried to attend any meetings, but you suggested that if we were in the area we should ‘pop in’ because it’s our port.

We often drive down to the port to look at the water and the office always appears to be closed. The shop area next to the office is open and full of equipment but the only people we ever see are the workers loading trucks.

I wanted to let you know that we did actually ‘pop in’ once because I was hoping to get a bucket of oyster shells. I stopped to ask permission at the port office. The door was locked, and no one was around, this was early afternoon during business hours. I started to walk over to the fueling office where the trucks were when someone who I believed was port manager Jay Personius (I have only spoken to him once) came walking out of that building to ask what I wanted. When I requested permission to get a bucket of shells, he told me I could not, they did not belong to the port and that they are privately owned. He did not volunteer any further information, returned to that office, and we left without any shells.
