Naselle freshman basketball player Brianna Johnson has been named one of 12 Athletes of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Johnson was called up to varsity last year as an eighth grader. In that time, she was used as a back-up guard for her team’s starting five. This year, coach Marie Green said she has excelled in her role as the Comets’ starting point guard.

“Having never played in this role, Johnson has continued to find her comfort zone over the first four games of the season,” the coach noted in the nomination.

In a recent 54-51 non-league win against Kalama, Johnson played a stellar game, scoring 18 points, going 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line, 3-for-3 from the floor, and 3-for-4 from the foul line. She had four steals, five assists and three rebounds.

“This breakout game is going to be a great building point for her as she continues this season and for the next three years,” Green noted. “She is a tremendous student-athlete and works hard both in the classroom and on the floor.”
