Smith, Womack lead Ilwaco mat successes: Coach commends learning attitudes

WARRENTON — Ilwaco wrestlers took their talents to Warrenton Saturday.
Senior Xavier Smith led the way, taking home first place at 120 pounds.
Two of head coach Larry Kemmer’s squad placed third: Alex Valencia at 132 pounds and Wade Smith at 157 pounds.
Three placed fourth: Oscar Gustafson (120), Cody Miller (138) and Gavin Estrada (144). Ezekiel Sanchez was fifth at 138.
The girls also grappled at Warrenton. Six of the eight on the team competed, with three placing. “Once again they brought back their eager-to-learn attitudes and pumped each other up throughout the evening,” said head coach Frank Womack.
Freshman Bailey Womack led the way with a first-place finish at 125 pounds. Classmate Abigail Doan took second at 110 and lone junior Keowah Iyall was third in the 125-pound division.
Womack was impressed with two first-time wrestlers. Emma Smith at 190 pounds and Angel Salas at 235 won their first career matches by falls in the first rounds; Salas pinned her opponent in 14 seconds, the season’s fasted pin.
Womack commended the squad’s “excellent energy and intensity.”
The girls had opened their season at Rainier Dec. 2. Bailey Womack was the only one to medal, placing third at 125. pounds
“As the head coach, I was extremely impressed by their energy level and blown away to see that Ophelia Wise (115), Keowah Iyall (125), and Lyla Inskeep (135) all achieved wins by fall during their first career matches,” Womack said.
