Naselle volleyball

The Naselle girls volleyball team won their first three matches in the District 4 1B Playoffs by sweeping Oakville on Monday (Oct. 30), Firm Foundation (Nov. 1) and Mary M. Knight (Nov. 2) before falling to Mossyrock (Nov. 3) and Willapa Valley (Nov. 4), ending the season for the Comets.

The marathon run through the single-elimination portion of the tournament took a toll on the Comet squad in the end.

“We fought hard, but traveling three days in a row made it difficult for us to play our game and (Willapa) Valley played well,” summed head coach Rebekah Wirkkala.

“So proud of our girls and all they have overcome this season. I am blessed to be their coach.”

The Comets will lose three experienced seniors to graduation, including Nicole Steenerson, Kayli Wirkkala and Gladys Wilson.

Ilwaco volleyball

The Ilwaco girls volleyball team concluded their season after consecutive losses in the District 4 2B Playoffs last week. The Lady Fishermen lost in straight sets to No. 4-seed Napavine last Saturday (Oct. 28) in Raymond and then fell to No. 5-seed Toledo in a loser-out match last Wednesday (Nov. 1) at Onalaska High School.

It was a young Ilwaco squad this season under first-year head coach Lanie Kary, who will lose three seniors to graduation, including Isabell McKinney, Clara Richardson and Alycia Figueroa.

Willapa Valley volleyball

The Willapa Valley volleyball team secured their spot in the upcoming WIAA 1B State Tournament after battling their way through the District 4 1B field, culminating in a dramatic five-set victory over Taholah last Saturday to finish third, behind Mossyrock and Columbia Adventist. The Vikings (9-5) beat Washington School for the Deaf, Pe Ell, Naselle and Taholah to earn their spot in the 1B state tournament.
