Animal Shelter Report: Pet of the Week Agate wants to be a working cat

- Agate wants to be a working cat.
Do you have a rodent problem in your barn or shop? SPCHS has a non-chemical answer — all-natural pest control with Working Cats. Our Working Cat Program allows cats who have no desire to be lap cats and are not interested in being house pets, a chance to receive care and thrive in their best environment while controlling the rodent population where they live. Cats designated as Working Cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tested for FIV/FELV, wormed, flea treated, and microchipped.

Six-year-old Agate says: “Where do I sign up”? This tuxedo boy with the cute three quarter length tail and the crumpled ear was found abandoned on a logging road and brought to us by a kind lady. It didn’t take long for us to realize that he would be happier in a barn or shop where he could hunt and be in control of his interactions with people. He was not fond of being petted, but has come to tolerate some pets with a scratcher. He loves to play with feather toys, and his speed and agility makes it clear he would be a dynamite hunter. Agate loves his kitty treats!
We have guidelines in place for the Working Cat Program. Some of the highlights include: no adoption fee; we provide equipment and supplies to orient the cat to their new environment (food, litter, cage) for transitioning the cat to their new home, and we will work with the new owner during the adaptation period to best facilitate a successful placement. Ongoing, the new caregivers provide the cat with adequate food (fed cats still hunt), fresh water, and a safe, dry, and warm shelter.
If you are interested in Agate, or any of our other Working Cats, please go to our website beachpets.com and fill out an application and send it to us electronically. Call the shelter at 360-642-1180 during our open hours 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday with any questions.
