Stevie Ray

Stevie Ray had a hard start at life. He was brought to us as a skinny young puppy that someone found tied to a tree. He wasn’t with us long before it became apparent why he was so thin — he couldn’t keep his food down. We took him to the vets and he was diagnosed with a condition called megaesophagus. With this ailment, the mobility in the esophagus is decreased, causing food and fluid to accumulate in the esophagus rather than passing to the stomach. Dogs affected with this disorder regurgitate all, or a large part of their nutrition. Stevie was starving…

Our veterinarian worked out a care plan for Stevie, and one of our dedicated volunteers took him home. The plan involved feeding him small meals of a special diet while he was suspended in a wooden support frame. Stevie began to gain weight, and this bought us some time to raise the necessary funds to get him a lifesaving surgery. Thanks to our wonderful supporters, we did raise enough money, and Stevie went to a specialty veterinary surgeon.

Flash forward — the surgery was a success and Stevie is now a thriving year old pup who is ready for his forever home!. He is happy and healthy, and a very quick study, eager to learn tricks and commands. On command, Stevie will sit, shake hands, stay/wait, lie down/stay, and catch treats from 10 feet away! In the early time we had Stevie, the staff and volunteers spent a lot of time guessing at his breed. Some people said he was husky, others said he was a shepherd of some sort. Well, his foster mom couldn’t stand not knowing for sure, so she paid out of her pocket to have his DNA tested. Drum roll, please! Stevie is 51.1% lab, 27.6% German shepherd, 11.5% akita, and 9.8 % Siberian husky! All in all, a wonderful combination that produced a very handsome and smart dog!

Stevie is an energetic, playful guy who is crate trained. He is working hard to contain his excitement when walking on a leash. He is ready for his forever home with a dog-savvy person or people who love the challenges presented by smart dogs, and an active environment where he would get plenty of exercise — lots of walks and a fully fenced yard. To him, cats are just too interesting (and not in a good way). Young children would likely be overwhelmed by his size and energy, but kids over 12 would be okay. As Pet of the Week, Stevie’s adoption fee has been halved to just $125, and he is fully vetted and ready to add joy to his new home!

Gracie is our kitty Pet of the Week. Look at that sweet face! Gracie’s eyes tell how much she wants to be loved! She is a senior gal at 12 years old but still gets around well. She is very people-friendly and loves attention. Gracie is living in one of our two free range kitty rooms, and it took her a while to warm up to the other cats in the room. She gradually came around, and would probably be a good companion for another older cat-friendly kitty. She would love a quiet adult home with “absolutely” no dogs.

She recently had a senior health check and her teeth cleaned and a few removed, so she’s good to go! She will make a wonderful, and relaxed lap cat. Her adoption fee has been sponsored by one of our Cat Cuddlers, so she will go without charge to a new forever home!

Kitten Palooza Part 2

During the summer, we had a very successful Kitten Palooza promotion where shelter kittens 6 months and younger found their forever homes for 50% off usual adoption fees. Now, the fall “crop” of kittens are coming into the shelter from their foster homes, where they have been vetted and socialized in preparation for adoption.

So, to help them find loving homes, we are launching Part 2 of Kitten Palooza through Oct. 28, and will have darling kittens 6 months and younger for 50% off regular adoption fees — this will generally be $50, as the regular fee is $100. Some special breed kittens such as Siamese mixes may be $75, as the regular fee is $150. If you are interested in taking part in this great kitten sale, visit our website beachpets.com and go to the Adopt section to see the available kittens. Submit an application to us electronically, and we will screen it and contact you to make arrangements for you to come in to meet the kittens in person. If you are not sure which kitten interests you, just write “view” on the line calling for the pet’s name.

We are open 11 a.m to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday by appointment only for adoptions and surrenders. Stray drop-off, spay/neuter vouchers and pet food program are available during open hours.

View our available cats and dogs and submit an online application at our website beachpets.com. An approved adoption application is required before scheduling a meet and greet with your selected animal.
