Sports Roundup: Naselle, RSB football continue to roll; Ilwaco VB secures first win

Naselle football

The Naselle football team wasted little time planting the Oakville Acorns 64-6 last Friday, climbing to 5-0 on the season.

The Comets blitzed the Acorns to a 50-0 halftime lead behind a balanced rushing attack that scattered six touchdowns among juniors Jack Strange, Jacob Lindstrom, Caiden Burke and Logan Quashnick. Sophomores Gunnar Gill and Justin Moncy also each tallied touchdowns in the rout. A hard-hitting Naselle defense forced six turnovers, including four forced fumbles, with Strange also adding two interceptions.

Naselle will next host Muckleshoot Tribal (0-5) on Friday, Oct. 6 in Naselle.

Ilwaco footballThe Ilwaco football team (2-3) dropped their third-straight game after losing to Rainier (3-2) 40-14 last Friday, Sept. 29.

It was the first league loss for the Fishermen this season, who slip to fourth place in the 2B Central Division, trailing Ocosta, Rainier and Wahkiakum.

The Fishermen (2-3) will look to end their three-game skid next Friday, Oct. 6, at home against Wahkiakum (1-4).

Raymond/South Bend football

The Ravens (4-1) notched their fourth consecutive victory and most impressive win this season, knocking off previously unbeaten Forks (4-1) 40-21 last Friday, Sept. 29.

The Ravens will next travel to face Neah Bay (3-2) Friday, Oct. 6 before a showdown with Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (4-1), on Friday, Oct. 13.

Pe Ell/Willapa Valley footballThe Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football team (4-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season by racing past Morton/White Pass 54-22 last Friday, Sept. 29.

The Titans were led by junior quarterback Nate Fluke and junior back Cody Strozyk, who combined to account for five touchdowns as Pe Ell/Willapa Valley built a 40-0 halftime lead.

The Titans will next travel to take on Toledo (4-1) on Friday, Oct. 6.

Ilwaco and Naselle cross countryThe Ilwaco and Naselle cross country teams had a busy stretch last week, participating a league meet in North Beach on Wednesday followed by the Nike Portland XC meet on Saturday, Sept. 30.

In the women’s 5,000-meter varsity race in North Beach, Ilwaco sophomore Nora Soule (23:37) finished second, the top overall finish among local runners.

In the men’s 5,000-meter varsity race in North Beach, Naselle senior Derrick Suomela (19:18) finished third, followed closely by Ilwaco senior Jacob Mathison (20:15) in fourth and junior Wyse Mulinix (20:57) in fifth.

In the girls 1.5-mile junior high race, Ilwaco nearly swept the top three with eighth grader Taylor Morrison finishing first overall, followed by teammate Elsa Linquist in second. Ilwaco sixth grader Lillian Hayes finished in fifth.

In the 1.5-mile boys junior high race, Ilwaco eighth grader Mason Harrell finished fifth overall, the highest place among the Ilwaco boys, followed by Naselle seventh grader Bowen Burkhalter in sixth.

In the Nike Portland XC meet, hosted at Clackamas Community College last Saturday, several runners set their personal best times, including Mulinix, who medaled by finishing in the top 50 with a time of 20:12.4 in the men’s division four 5,000-meter race.

The Ilwaco and Naselle cross country teams will both be back in action this week when Ilwaco hosts the Black Lake race on Thursday, Oct. 5.

Ilwaco volleyballThe Ilwaco girls volleyball team notched their first win of the season by defeating Chief Leschi (0-7) last Thursday, Sept. 28, in Puyallup.

The Lady Fishermen (1-7), under first-year head coach Lanie Kary, won in four sets to pick up the win. Ilwaco will host their next home match Thursday, Oct. 5 against South Bend.

Willapa Valley volleyball

The Willapa Valley girls volleyball team (6-3, 4-1 1B Columbia Valley League) had their five-game winning streak snapped by Naselle (4-3, 3-2) after losing in four sets Tuesday, Sept. 26.

With the loss, the Vikings slipped behind Mossyrock (5-2, 4-0) atop the division.

Raymond volleyball

After reeling off three straight wins, the Raymond volleyball team lost to Napavine last Wednesday in straight sets.

The Seagulls (8-6), remain unbeaten in 2B Pacific League play (5-0) and will return to action Thursday, Oct. 5 against Ocosta.

Ilwaco soccerThe Ilwaco girls soccer team (1-6) lost to Ocosta (6-3) 10-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Ilwaco joins Forks (1-4) and Winlock (0-5) at the bottom of the 2B Central Division as they each seek their first league win of the season.

The Lady Fishermen will next travel to face Adna (1-4) on Wednesday, Oct. 4 and Tenino (5-4) on Saturday, Oct. 7.
