- Naselle players celebrate after scoring the final point in a win over Pe Ell last Thursday.
NASELLE — After an unsteady start to the season, the Naselle girls volleyball team is beginning to find their footing.
Following losing three of their first five matches to start the campaign, the Comets (4-3) have quietly put together a three-game winning steak, including impressive wins over Willapa Valley (6-3) and Pe Ell (4-4) last week.
In their match against Pe Ell on Thursday, Sept. 28, Naselle won in four sets in a competitive league battle.
In the first set, both teams fought to a 23-23 tie before Naselle sophomore MB/OPP Haylee Rose helped score the final two points with strong serves. In the second set — another back-and-forth battle — Pe Ell eventually won 29-27. In the third set, Naselle prevailed with a narrow 25-23 win before pulling away and putting Pe Ell away 25-16 in the fourth and final set. Naselle do-everything sophomore L/DS/S Sadie Kilponen was instrumental in the final set, helping the Comets build a 6-0 lead on stellar serving.
The Comets are currently tied for third place in a deeply competitive 1B Columbia Valley League, trailing Mossyrock (5-2) and Willapa Valley (6-3).
The 15-member varsity squad features four seniors, including MD/DS Avalon Sullivan, OH Gladys Wilson, OH/S Kayli Wirkkala and OH/OPP Nicole Steenerson.
Up next: Naselle will next host South Bend on Thursday, Oct. 5.
