NASELLE — For the second time this season, the Naselle Comets (4-0) ran wild over the Ocosta Wildcats (1-2), this time for a 48-19 victory.
Naselle entered the third week of the season expecting a matchup with winless Winlock, but due to injuries the Cardinals were forced to forfeit, allowing Ocosta to accept the challenge of facing the Comets for the second in three weeks — the first ending in an 82-29 Comet win in Westport.
The game was in Naselle this time around but the result was the same, with the Comets rushing for nearly 400 yards as they bullied the Wildcats to a 36-7 halftime lead, led by junior running back Jack Strange and junior quarterback Jacob Lindstrom. Strange racked up a game-high 189 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries, averaging nearly 15 yards per touch. Lindstrom, a dual-threat quarterback, added 115 rushing yards and 101 yards through the air while connecting on 6 of 10 pass attempts, with Strange on the receiving end of both touchdowns.
Both teams traded touchdowns on their opening possessions, with Naselle recapturing the lead in the final minute of the quarter on a 17-yard keeper by Lindstrom, giving the Comets a 14-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Naselle defense started to settle in and key on the Ocosta quarterback Tarren Lewis, who absorbed some brutal hits, including two on the same series by junior linebacker Jack Strange. Naselle senior Jacob Pakenen was also a problem for the Wildcats, who struggled to block the 6-foot-4 200-pound defensive end. Pakenen ended two first-half Ocosta drives with tackles for loss on 4th down, including a sack and forced fumble.
Meanwhile, the Comet offense continued to go to work using a power running game to bowl through the Wildcat defense. One of the most impressive runs occurred early in the second quarter, when Strange took a toss to the right and followed a crushing block by junior running back Caiden Burke, springing Strange for a 48-yard run down the Naselle sideline and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Strange scored on the next play, giving Naselle a 22-7 lead, and the physical toll was beginning to mount on the visiting team, who gave up two more touchdown to Lindstrom and Strange in rapid succession, ending the half with the Comets ahead 36-7.
Up next: Undefeated Naselle will travel to take on Oakville (1-3) Friday, Sept. 29.
