Sports Roundup: Naselle football clobbers Sound Christian, llwaco soccer nets first win

Naselle football

The Naselle football team continued their impressive offensive onslaught by slaughtering Sound Christian 74-28 last Friday in Tacoma.

The Comets (3-0) have outscored their first three opponents (66-40 against Quilcene, and 82-29 against Ocosta) by an average of 41 points, as Naselle quarterback Jacob Lindstrom and running back Jack Strange have been virtually unstoppable for the Comet offense this season.

Against Sound Christian, the Comets churned out almost 700 yards in total offense, including more than 400 by Lindstrom alone, who finished with 223 yards passing and 191 yards rushing with four touchdowns. Strange racked up 297 yards rushing while adding three more touchdowns.

Naselle (3-0) will next host Winlock (0-3) 7:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22.

Naselle volleyball

The Naselle volleyball team notched their first league win of the season last week, sweeping the Firm Foundation Eagles (0-4) in straight sets Thursday, Sept. 14 in Battle Ground. The Comets (2-1) will next travel to face Columbia Adventist Academy on Sept. 20 and Willapa Valley on Sept. 26 before returning home against Pe-Ell for a match on Sept. 28.

Ilwaco volleyball

The Ilwaco volleyball team are still searching for their first win of the season after being swept in straight sets by Raymond (5-5) last Thursday and Willapa Valley (4-2) on Monday. Ilwaco (0-5) will seek their first win of the season when they host winless Taholah (0-4) at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.

Willapa Valley volleyballWillapa Valley (4-2, undefeated in league play) remains atop the 1B Columbia Valley League after reeling off a three-game winning streak against Columbia Adventist Academy, Pe-Ell and Ilwaco last week. The Vikings (4-2) will hope to continue the streak when they host Three Rivers Christian (0-3) Thursday, Sept. 21.

Ilwaco soccer

The Ilwaco girls soccer team netted their first win of the season last week, defeating Astoria (2-2) 3-1 on Thursday, Sept. 14 at home. The Lady Fishermen (1-2) will next travel to face Onalaska (1-2) on Monday, Sept. 25.

Ilwaco cross country

The Ilwaco cross country team participated in the Evergreen League meet on Thursday, Sept. 14 at Hoquiam High School. In the men’s 5,000-meter race, Ilwaco senior Jacob Mathison (20:36) and Wyse Mulinix (20:48) were the top Fishermen finishers, taking 17th and 18th place respectively among 66 runners. In the women’s 5,000-meter race, Nora Soule was the highest-placing Ilwaco runner, finishing in 12th place (24:59), followed by Esther Thomas (31:46) in 19th among 30 runners.

Naselle cross country

The Naselle cross country team participated in the Jack and Jill Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Lake Sacajawea. In the men’s 5,000-meter race, Naselle senior Derek Soumela was the top Comet finisher, placing 13th out of 74 runners with a time of 19:07.3. The next Naselle runner was sophomore Trajen Ford (21:44.7), who finished 29th. Naselle freshman Caesar Garcia (22:00.5), finished 47th. La Center junior Carter Sherry (12:27.6) finished with the fastest time overall. In the women’s 5,000-meter event, Naselle sophomore Jessica Underhill (29:17.3) finished in 35th place among 52 runners.
