From the editor’s desk: Rod Run

Published 7:52 am Monday, September 11, 2023

This week’s edition will include coverage of the Rod Run to the End of the World, the concluding major spectacle of the 2023 summer tourist season.

An event huge in scope, for years we’ve relied on our digital edition to provide access to dozens of overflow photos. Please see www.chinookobserver.com for this additional coverage. We also save photos from one year to the next to print in the annual Rod Run guide we produce. The current year’s is available on our website and was inserted in last week’s print edition.

Apart from a smattering of DUIs, this year’s event and its overflow of car fans were cheerful and law-abiding. Additional law officers came here to help out, something for which residents are always grateful.

Members of the Beach Barons — the peninsula’s homegrown classic and hot rod car club — do a truly remarkable job. We should all express our appreciation for this economic boost that is so treasured by so many.

This week, we’ll have our usual big mix of news, photos and features about local life here on the southwest Washington coast. For one thing, we’ve been working on a story about the continuing transition of the former Naselle Youth Camp campus into something of ongoing value to Naselle and the county as a whole.

In case you missed it, one of last week’s favorite stories with readers was from out beyond Naselle, where a local celebrity and his brother stepped up to restore a pioneer church in the beautiful Deep River Valley. See it here: tinyurl.com/Deep-River-Church.

Thank you for supporting the Chinook Observer. It’s our unique mission to report the news from this corner of the state. This coverage can’t happen without you!
