ILWACO — The Ilwaco Fishermen football team improved to 2-0 on the season after dismantling the Toutle Lake Fighting Ducks 49-0 last Friday in the team’s home opener.

The Fishermen improved to 2-0 on the young season and currently sit atop the 2B central division with the win, the only team without a defeat, followed by Rainier (1-1).

Thunder and lightning

The Fishermen struck with thunder and lightning in the form of running backs Cannon Johnson and Kaemon Sawa, who powered Ilwaco to a 22-0 halftime lead.

Sawa took a third quarter reverse 53 yards to pay dirt, the longest touchdown of his career and his second score of the game.

“Once I got through the gap there was open field with nobody by me, so I just turned on the burners and got the touchdown,” said Sawa, a shifty 5-9, 165-pound senior.

Cannon Johnson, a 220-pound senior fullback, bulldozed through the Fighting Ducks defense for three total touchdowns and 68 yards on just 10 carries.

Senior running Boston Caron added another score while racking up a game-high 180 yards on 17 carries. Caron has rushed for a team-high 254 yards through the first two games of the season.

Fishermen sophomore running back Dylan Pelas scored the final touchdown, pushing the Ilwaco lead to 49-0. Pelas also nabbed an interception on defense.

Junior defensive lineman Marcus Lynch was a menace on defense, ending two Toutle Lake first-half drives with fourth-down sacks. Sophomore linebacker Corbin Johnson was also impactful, making several memorable plays that limited Toutle Lake to minimal gains.

As a whole, Ilwaco has yet to yield their first touchdown this season, outscoring their first two opponents by a 96-0 margin after shutting out North Beach 47-0 in the season-opener.

Up next: Ilwaco (2-0) will travel to face their toughest test of the season in Raymond/South Bend (1-1) in a 2B Pacific County showdown set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15.
