Letter: Care for others like they are our loved ones

I’m writing this letter filled with great sadness that Willapa Commons lost its lease at its previous location in Ocean Park. This organization offers respite for those experiencing homelessness — an opportunity to get out of the weather, to have coffee and snacks, and to rest.

I had an opportunity to hear Nicole Pearson and Salina Mecham speak at the recent Opioid Summit about the work they do and the work they want to see done in the future. Such caring staff are working there to see that the needs of all who walk in their doors are met. One point mentioned was that people feel uncomfortable seeing guests who hang outside and talk to themselves or pace or look homeless.

Can we remember that each person is someone’s loved one, worthy of treating with respect and dignity? Can we as a community commit to loving these people and supporting this organization? If they were our loved ones wouldn’t we want someone to care for them in our stead? Can we overcome this uncomfortableness through educating ourselves? This is my challenge to our community!
