While the “latte” or more modern “avocado” factors have been largely debunked as a realistic way to combat inequality and build long-term wealth, many people do not realize just how much they lose to poorly thought-out purchases every week.

One recent report found that 34% of Americans spend at least $50 each time they order takeout while 20% spend more on apps than they would while physically at the restaurant.

Based on Bureau of Economic Analysis data pulled by online gambling platform Betway, the average American spent $3,631 on takeout food in 2022.

These Are The States Spending The Most on Takeout

This number was significantly higher in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia — residents of Washington, D.C. spend nearly double the national average with an average $6,241 a year going towards food brought home from a restaurant.

Perhaps due to the large number of high-earning politicians working late, this was the highest number in the country and significantly more than the states coming in second and third place — residents of Hawaii and Maine spent a respective $4,647 and $4,499.

While the report does not differentiate between ordering food through an app or picking it up directly from the restaurant, some of the most popular takeout items include pizza, sushi and Mexican food. Ion an average month, Americans enter terms like “pizza takeout” and “pizza delivery” into a search engine 309,100 times (this also amounts to more than 76% of all food-related searches.)

States that drop the least money for takeout include the average $2,756 spent in Oklahoma and average $3,016 spent in Tennessee.  While prices are generally lower in the Midwest, Wyoming made the list of the 10 biggest spenders with an average $4,022.

Here’s How Inflation Is Influencing Takeout Spending Trends

“Analyzing data for the number of takeout restaurants for America’s top five cuisines, San Francisco is revealed to have the most takeout options per 10,000 residents (8.4 per 10,000 residents),” reads the report. “Portland comes in second place with 7 takeout restaurants for the most popular cuisines per 10,000 residents, followed by Long Beach in third with 6.9”

New York, meanwhile, was officially dubbed the city of takeout lovers as the 45 searches for every 1,000 residents that its residents type into Alphabet’s  (GOOGL) – Get Free Report Google or other search engines every month is the highest in the nation.

While the report did not look at differences from prior years, the rising cost of food has definitely affected both individual buyers’ purchasing power and wider shopping trends.

All-you-can-eat buffets have been doing particularly well — numbers from traffic analytics company Placer.ai recently found that buffet restaurants saw significantly stronger traffic than the restaurant and fast-food industries as a whole.

The country’s largest buffet chain with nearly 400 locations, Golden Corral saw its same-store sales grow by 14% from 2020 to 2023 while combined visits to the chain along with frontrunners for the country’s three biggest chains Cicis and Pizza Ranch were up 125% between March 2022 and 2023.

“In 2022 when inflation began to dominate headlines, buffets’ baseline visit growth started to soar,” the study’s authors wrote. “Likely, diners choosing to eat out became increasingly concerned with getting value for money and buffets became a popular choice.”
