LONG BEACH — It was a day “Fore the Furballs.”

On Sunday, July 16, approximately 40 golfers turned up on a foggy morning at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach to participate in the FORE! The Furrballs Golf Tournament, a golf event benefiting the local South Pacific County Humane Society (SPCHS). The tournament raised approximately $5,500 for the shelter, organizers said.

Many participants brought along their four-legged companions, who were welcome for the unique event, which included awards for the “best dressed doggie.”

The nine-hole event featured a shotgun start, with all the participants teeing off simultaneously from different holes and a two-person scramble format, where each player takes a shot before determining which spot they liked better and continuing from that spot.

Raffle tickets for prizes and mulligans, or second-chance shots, were also sold prior (three for $5) with all the funds raised benefiting the local shelter, located at 330 2nd Street in Long Beach.

Participants also had a chance for a $10,000 cash prize, if they sank a hole-in-one on the fourth hole.
