Vikings go marauding for medals

Sophomore Kaitlyn Ganzel placed 10th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:05.44.

Brooklyn Patrick spent much of the WIAA 1B state championships on the podium.

The Willapa Valley High School senior earned four medals, three on her own and the fourth on a relay team. She even fell over during one race and still got up to earn a medal.

Her points, with those of her teammates, propelled the Viking girls to a fifth-place team trophy.

Patrick was state champion in the 100 meters, winning in 13.3 seconds, having qualified as the second-fastest runner with 13.10.

In the 100-meter hurdles, she placed second, clocking 15.54 just ahead of friendly rival Charlie Carper from Pe Ell.

In the 300m hurdles, she was the third-fastest qualifier in 49.17 and, despite falling at the next to last barrier, she finished eighth in 54.12.

For her fourth medal she teamed with pole vault and javelin champion Lauren McGough (see related story), sprinter Emily Wilson and freshman Julianna Lynch for the 4x100m relay. They won their heat with the fastest time of 52.11 and placed third in the final race with 52.52.

Wilson, a junior, was the third-fastest qualifier in the 400m and placed second in the final with 1:01.54. Garfield-Palouse runner Kennedy Cook, who had broken the 1B meet record in the preliminary, broke it again in the final, recording 57.30.

Wilson’s third medal was earned placing fourth in the 200m with a time of 26.95. The winner again was Cook, setting a meet record of 25.47 and helping lead her school to the girls’ first-place team trophy by a large points margin.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Ganzel placed 10th in the 1,600m with a time of 6:05.44. Classmates Sam Sheary, who set personal records at district in shot put and discus, and pole vaulter Jasmine Solso, also competed.

The Viking boys earned medals in two events. Connor Deniston placed eighth in the shot put with 39-10. The winner, from Waterville, threw 47-11.25.

In the 4x100m relay, the boys placed seventh running 47.89, with the winners from Grace Academy clocking 45.45. On the WVHS squad were junior Tyson Portmann, two sophomores, Connor Reyes and Cody Strozyk, and freshman Spud Swogger.

Two boys competed in high jump: Freshman Hank Swartz placed 11th with 5-6 and sophomore Owen Metcalf cleared 5-2. Freshman Chase Porter ran the 100m in 12.15, and Portmann ran the 300m hurdles in 48.30, but neither advanced.

Other Viking athletes on the state roster included freshman sprinter and long jumper Devin Lundby.
