CHEHALIS — The Ilwaco softball team lost 11-2 to Toledo in the opening round of the 2B District 4 tournament last Tuesday, May 16, ending the season for the Lady Fishermen.
Ilwaco finished with five hits in the season-ending loss, led by 8th-grader Mikaila Warfield who had two hits, including a double.
Ilwaco (8-11) went 3-7 in the 2B Pacific League, finishing in fifth place under first-year head coach Mooch Smith.
“We did not fulfill our goals this season, but we played very hard,” Smith summed.
“We were competitive in almost every game. We had the one-bad-inning curse and if you take those innings away (about eight) we would have possibly won a league title. We have a lot of talent for the future and I am very proud of these girls. We could not do it without the assistant coaches — Gordon Dille, Larry Kemmer, and Monica Sicar.”
Among the 22 active players on the roster, the Lady Fishermen will lose five seniors to graduation, including Olivia McKinstry, Justyce Patana, Kiera Rousch, Victoria Pelas and Emalie Weidner.
All-League list
Four Lady Fishermen softball players were announced to the 2023 Pacific League All-League list, as voted on by the coaches, on Monday, May 21, including: Megan Dille, Emily Morris and Kaylee Anderson, who are all anticipated to return to the Lady Fishermen lineup next season. Coach Smith praised each all-star player on their accomplishments this season:
Megan Dille:
“One of the best players I have ever coached. She was the team’s most valuable player and played almost every position, led us in hitting.”
Mikaila Warfield:
“She can play every position and can hit the hell out of the ball. I have never seen a better 8th grader in my life.”
Kaylee Anderson:
“She really stepped up and was a very good fundamental catcher. She was one of the best catchers in the league and has a very high ceiling.”
Emily Morris:
“She was a rock for us at second base. This is her first year playing this position and did great.”
