Letter: Serious reasons to favor fireworks ban

First, I would like to say I support a ban on consumer fireworks on the Peninsula.

I have a husband who suffers from PTSD after serving our country and doing two tours of Vietnam. The sound of the M-80s going off tear him up. He has to deal with these loud booms not just one or two days during the 4th, but seven or eight days straight.

We also have two dogs that suffer with the sound of fireworks going off. This last year I had to tranquilize them eight days in a row. This is definitely not good for my dogs.

The stress of worrying about my husband and my dogs is tremendous. I am sure there are others who also feel the same way.

In the last several years it has gotten worse. Fireworks continue to harm our beaches, ocean, and are destroying the peaceful lives of people and wildlife that call the Long Beach Peninsula home. Add to that the threat of a horrific fire that could start in the beach grass or in a neighbors dry grass and sweep through destroying homes and lives including pets and wildlife.

We moved to the Peninsula almost eight years ago when we retired because of the beauty that surrounds us. We live for the beach, the ocean and the wonderful wildlife that we see almost everyday out our windows. We need to protect nature so it will flourish and be here for our grandchildren.

Please stop and think about the important reasons a complete ban of consumer fireworks make sense. We need to be good stewards.

As retirees we have a few more years to enjoy our life on this beautiful Peninsula. A ban means a lot to us. We want a ban! Please join us.
