Letter: Come back: We value and need you

Recent issues of the Observer have highlighted the views and contributions of young adults, raised here and with university degrees acquired elsewhere, who returned to the Peninsula to make a difference here.

Brandon Cline’s article about the Ilwaco watershed purchase featured Matt Lessnau as project leader for this important project. Mr. Lessnau took responsibility early in the process; coordinated work from many stakeholders inside and outside Ilwaco; and stayed with it until the purchase was complete. This work will make a difference for generations to come.

Abby Bentley’s letter to the editor about returning to the Peninsula for work was also needed. Ms. Bentley is working in Pacific County’s Public Health efforts, so I can already see that she is making a difference for Pacific County residents.

Ms. Bentley’s message to young people is important: If you need a university degree for your best development, go to a great university wherever it is — then consider coming back here. The whole world needs your skills, and so does our Peninsula. Even as a young person, you can be a respected leader in a small community. Our community is better off because you returned!
