TACOMA — Naselle track team will need the big bus to travel to Cheney.

Several athletes qualified at the District meet to compete in the WIAA state 1B meet beginning Thursday at Eastern Washington University.

The boys’ performances at Tacoma placed the Comets second among the west-side teams competing.

As he has all year, senior Trenton Stephens led the way. He set a meet record of 21-00.50 to win the long jump and won the triple jump with 39-08.75. He was second in high jump (6-0) and fourth in javelin (137-09).

He is one of four Naselle athletes who qualified for state in the maximum four events allowed.

Sophomore Derek Suomela was third in the 400 meters, and fourth in both long jump and high jump.

Senior Josh Chadwick placed fifth in both the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles.

Jayden Ding advanced in the triple jump and pole vault (tied in third place).

They form the core of the relay squads which both advanced. Suomela, Ding and Chadwick run the 4x400m relay with Brandon Kincaid.

Ding and Chadwick are joined in the 4x100m relay by Kincaid and senior Riley Thorsen.

Junior Elmer Toftmark will go to state as a relay alternate.

Junior Brayden Colombo qualified in three events, placing fifth in both discus and javelin and seventh in pole vault.

Junior Tyler Kirkman advanced in two events, placing second in the discus and fourth in shot put.

Malcolm Schell was fourth in discus and sophomore Jacob Pakenen sixth in pole vault.

Two girls will represent Naselle at Cheney. Senior Echo Cenci was third in the pole vault. She placed sixth in the 100m. Eighth-grader Mylee Dunagan was fourth in the high jump.

• Willapa Valley girls enjoyed stellar success in field events. Lauren McGough won the pole vault, ahead of teammate Hannah Hamilton, and also won the javelin. Lanissa Amacher won the shot put and was second in the discus. For the boys, Willapa’s Chris Western won the pole vault.
