ILWACO — Ilwaco High School music students are gearing up for their spring concerts next week.

The rehearsals come amid news that three IHS students have been selected as alternates to potentially compete at the WIAA state music championships later this spring.

Tazlina Thomas, who plays tenor saxophone, has been selected as an alternate for the state band contest. Two sopranos, Gabby Bell and Chloe Martin, have been named alternates to the state choir contest.

The IHS Choir Concert is set for March 8. It will take place at Hilltop Middle School auditorium at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Bell and Martin will be among performers. A planned highlight is “Summertime” from George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.”

The Concert and Jazz bands will perform at 7 p.m. March 9, also at Hilltop. Selections for the Concert Band include pieces from the musical “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Bacchanale” from Saint-Saëns’ opera “Samson and Delilah.” The Jazz Band’s lineup will showcase Thomas and fellow senior Joey Fitzgerald with “Tenor Madness.”

Admission to the two concerts is free, but director Rachel Lake is collecting donations for the music department’s trip to Florida March 30 to April 6.

The band students plan their third-annual “Mattress Sale”fundraiser at the Hilltop School Gym March 12. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
