NASELLE — The Naselle volleyball team swept Willapa Valley in straight sets last week, earning a pivotal league victory.
The Lady Comets (7-1) topped the Vikings (6-1) 25-19, 25-15, and 25-22, securing second place in the 1B Columbia Valley League standings as Willapa Valley slipped to third.
In the first set, Naselle fell behind as the Vikings raced out to an early 10-7 lead. Following a timeout, stellar serving from Naselle junior Lauren Katyryniuk helped pull the Lady Comets back in front, where they took the first set 25-19.
In the second set, Naselle jumped out to a 8-1 advantage and never looked back, cruising to a 25-15 win.
In the third set, Naselle and Willapa Valley battled back and forth before tying at 18. The Comet defense, including 5’11 junior Kaylin Shrives and 5’10 senior Morgan Reitz, helped lead a defensive front that shut down Viking scoring opportunities in the final set, allowing the Lady Comets to earn a hard-fought 25-22 victory.
