SMITH CREEK — A fully engaged blaze in a single-family residence and related mobile home spread into surrounding woods Thursday afternoon about an eighth of a mile north of Smith Creek Road on U.S. Highway 101 north of Raymond.

As of 3:20 p.m., the only known casualty is a family dog.

Local firefighters first extinguished the house fire and then managed to contain the forest fire by about 3 p.m., soon before the arrival of help from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. A DNR helicopter also responded but found it unnecessary to drop fire retardant.

Local personnel were still in the process of thoroughly dousing the affected area at the time of this update.

The fire arrives at a time of unseasonably warm and dry April weather, which led to a warning about the possibility of widespread danger.

We’ll have additional details later.
