Erika Glenn operates against Greenlee Clark (24) as Kal Schaplow (32) defends the basket.

LONGVIEW — Erika Glenn scored 33 points, leading No. 5 seed Ilwaco to a 44-42 win over No. 4 seed Toledo in the Regional round of the post-season Saturday, Feb. 29.

The Lady Indians’ stifling defense had held Ilwaco to an average of 27 points in two previous victories, but Glenn’s dominance Saturday gave Ilwaco just enough firepower to win, earning the Lady Fishermen a first-round bye at State. Toledo, trailing but within six throughout the final minutes, would not go away thanks to an incredible six offensive rebounds in a three-minute span by six-footer Stacie Spahr.

Glenn, a star shooting guard who seems to get to the basket at will against many teams, had to mix in a stop-and-pop mid-range game and some hard-fought put-backs to get Ilwaco on the scoreboard against the Central League champion Indians. She also held Central League MVP Kal Schaplow to three points.

Glenn set an early tone after being held to 14 points combined in the teams’ previous two meetings. She made a stop on the fast-break on Toledo’s first possession, then drove the baseline and scored through contact. When Schaplow lost the handle at the top of the key, Glenn tore around a screen, gathered the ball, and took it for a layup and a 4-0 lead. She had eight first-quarter points, along with a block of a three-point attempt, as Ilwaco led 10-6 after one.

Near the end of the half, Glenn scored on a put-back to tie it at 16, followed with a steal at half-court with three seconds left, missed a layup at the buzzer while being fouled, and hit both free throws. That gave Glenn 16 points and Ilwaco led 18-16.

Glenn added another steal-and-score coming out of halftime, but the Lady Fishermen had more balanced scoring in the third quarter. Estella Sheldon had five points, Olivia McKinstry scored in close on a handoff from Glenn, and Ilwaco had a 30-28 lead after three.

Glenn, who had been missing from three-point range throughout the game, finally nailed one early in the fourth for a 33-30 lead. Sheldon hit Glenn on a lob for two more, and Kylie Gray scored on a kick-out from Glenn for the biggest Ilwaco lead to that point at 37-32 with 4:00 to go.

With Ilwaco ahead 37-34 on a sideline in-bounds play, Glenn took a screen-handoff from Sunny Kemmer.

“It’s called a sideline box,” Glenn said of the play. “I normally take it to the basket.”

But with Glenn’s defender, Greenlee Clark, reading the action and playing the drive, Glenn nailed her second three of the quarter to make it a six-point game with 3:05 left.

Gracie Madil answered with a three-pointer to cut the lead in half, but Glenn got it back to five, turning the corner and driving around the defense for a layup with 2:30 remaining.

Spahr fought to keep Toledo in it, grabbing four offensive rebounds on a single possession, including on her own missed free throw. Spahr ended up getting one made free throw out of this effort, cutting the lead to four. After another driving basket by Glenn, Spahr put back a Toledo three-point attempt to bring the lead back down to four with 1:03 left.

Toledo stayed alive. Haleigh Holmes pick-pocketed Tiana Ramsey, and Glenn and Ramsey each missed front-ends shooting one-and-one. After Ramsey’s miss with 3.3 seconds left and Ilwaco leading 44-41, Glenn committed a foul, sending Schaplow to the line with 0.9 seconds.

Schaplow made the first and deliberately missed the second. Holmes outmuscled McKinstry to snatch the offensive rebound, but with McKinstry in her way she could not gain full control and get off a shot in time, so Ilwaco held on for the victory.

The State tournament is scheduled to open in Spokane March 4. Ilwaco gets a first-round bye and will play at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 5 against the winner of the previous day’s contest between No. 6 seed Adna and No. 14 seed Northwest Christian (Colbert).

Ilwaco beat Adna in Districts 42-26.
