BATTLE GROUND — The Comets used the half-court press to end their Tuesday, Jan. 7 game with Firm Foundation almost as soon as it began, putting themselves on their way to a 74-9 victory. After a Chase Haataia bank shot on their first possession, the Comets got steals at half-court on Firm Foundation’s first five possessions.
Kolby Glenn was the point-man for the Comets’ press, which generally sought to trap the Eagles (0-6) against the sideline. On one play, though, Glenn pre-empted the strategy by stealing the initial pass that was headed for the sideline, taking a few dribbles and hitting a pull-up three. Glenn scored nine points in the span of a 39 seconds, and the Comets scored on all five early steals for a 13-0 lead less than two minutes in.
Naselle then dialed back the press, but Glenn got another steal anyway, pouncing on an unguarded dribble and taking it for a layup to make it 15-0. Another steal and layup by Glenn made it 19-0 at the 4:02 mark.
By the end of the quarter, the Comets were already greatly slowing their pace but remained efficient. Caleb Haataia buried a corner three to make it 26-0 with 2:13 left, and had a steal and outlet pass to Corey Gregory for a layup and a 30-0 lead after one.
Ten Comets scored. Glenn had all 13 of his points in the first quarter, Ethan Lindstrom added 12, and Caleb Haataia scored a career-high 12.
Freshman Kolten Lindstrom had seven of his nine points in the first quarter in some of the first playing time of his career. Monte Schell added six of his eight points in the fourth.
