Girls basketball: Mount Vernon Christian 50, Naselle 29

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon Christian took a 46-19 lead through three quarters, on the way to 50-29 win over Naselle Friday, Jan. 3.

The long-armed, pressing Hurricanes piled up steals of Comet passes in the early going.

They went with high-volume three-point shooting on offense, knocking down five threes in the first quarter on their way to a 19-9 lead.

The ‘Canes, ranked fifth in 1B in RPI at week’s end, built the lead to 18 points by half-time and cruised to victory.

Josie Droog led Mount Vernon with 19 points. Kaylin Shrives led Naselle with 10 points. Bella Colombo added eight points and five assists, and Jackie Steenerson snagged nine rebounds.

Naselle will visit Knappa Friday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. The Lady Comets, 4-6 overall and 1-0 in league play, host Three Rivers Christian Tuesday for a league contest Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
