ILWACO — Faith Simonson stopped a hard shot with four and a half minutes to go to preserve Ilwaco’s 1-0 victory over Winlock Wednesday, Oct. 2. Elle Personius scored the game’s only goal from close range in the 25th minute.

Ilwaco (4-5, 1-1 Central League) bombarded the Cardinals (1-5-2, 0-2) in the early going, getting past the midfield defense to generate open shots. The Fishermen eventually capitalized. Justyce Patana used a move to get past defenders on the sideline, the ball came to the middle, and Personius was right there to score with 15:19 left in the half.

Ilwaco stayed on the attack. Immediately following the goal, Sarah Frank made her own move down the sideline and passed ahead to Justyce Patana but it went just a bit too far. In the second half, Patana got the ball near the goal for some promising shots. Early in the half she missed off the sidebar, then later had another close miss.

With Ilwaco controlling the game but unable to add to its lead, Winlock was always a play away from tying the game. After another series of pretty passes by Ilwaco that came up empty, the Cardinals cleared the ball and generated shots of their own. Richardson leapt to her right for a stop with five minutes remaining. Seconds later, Winlock used a corner inbound play to set up a close shot, but Richardson made the save and cleared the ball out. Winlock never had another scoring opportunity.

Ilwaco will visit Kalama Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. and Napavine Oct. 14 at 4:30 p.m.
