WESTPORT — Ilwaco’s second-year soccer team faced perhaps the first truly strong varsity program it has dealt with, taking on the Ocosta Wildcats on the road Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Ocosta broke open a scoreless game with six goals in a 28-minute span, on its way to a 7-0 victory.
Ilwaco created scoring chances, but Ocosta regularly cleared the ball quickly or herded them where they wanted them to go. On their own chances, Ocosta expertly controlled the ball with rebounds and short, precise passes. Deflections by Sunny Kemmer and stops by goalie Faith Richardson helped keep them off the board for the first 12 minutes, but then the dam finally burst.
Miki Nez scored first with 28:05 remaining, followed by Trinity White five minutes later, both taking advantage of a long stretch of ball control near the goal.

Katelynn Denny got hot from long-range with three goals in the last 12 minutes of the half. She arced a tough shot across from the left side of the field to the back-right corner of the goal, then followed from about 30 yards out. Near the end of the half, Denny scored from right in front of the goal on a spectacular pass by Mikayla Ness from the corner of the field for a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Ilwaco made several late-half charges down the field that were rebuffed near the goal.
Coming out of halftime, Ocosta set up Natalie Carloza with an easy path to the goal, and she scored just seconds into play to put another nail in the coffin. Taylor Jardin added the final goal late in the game.
