ILWACO — Elma scored all three goals in the final 18 minutes for a 3-0 win over Ilwaco Friday, March 29.

The Fishermen went on the attack right away on the kickoff, but Elma goalie AJ Hernandez made a diving save of Ethan Personius’s shot 18 seconds into the game.

Both teams generated their share of chances throughout the first half, but neither could break through. Ilwaco’s Ethan Cavin, making his first start as goalkeeper, stopped a penalty kick in the 14th minute. He made two more leaping stops in the half, including one after a steal right in front of the goal.

“He had a lot of saves,” coach Andrew Goodwin said of Cavin, who had also played goalie during the second half of Monday’s South Bend game. “He took control of the goal box.”

Ilwaco had a first-half scoring chance after a botched throw in by Elma resulted in Personius getting open to the outside of the defense, and another when Brandon Duke dribbled it off a couple of defenders to get near the goal, but could not get it past Hernandez.

Elma opened the second half by quickly generating a scoring chance, but Cavin stopped a high-velocity shot from about 20 feet. Hernandez made a diving stop on Jaden Turner’s shot on a close-range rebound.

Finally, Elma scored on a short penalty kick that resulted from Cavin illegally picking the ball up after he had set it down. Minutes later, Elma’s forward got way to the outside of the Ilwaco defense and scored easily. The Eagles added another goal late in the game for the 3-0 victory.

Elma improved to 4-3-1 on the year, while Ilwaco fell to 0-4.
