LONGVIEW — Trying to save its season with a huge comeback, Ilwaco unleashed a full-court press to create complete chaos in the final minutes. The Fishermen cut a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to four but came up short against Adna 71-62 Friday, Feb. 15.

With over six minutes to go and Adna up 56-39, Alex Kaino started to take over, hitting a step-back three-pointer. The Pirates began turning the ball over, but Ilwaco took a while to really begin chipping away.

The lead was still 14 before John Glenn’s three-pointer from the corner with 3:19 left. Ilwaco’s press forced a travel nine seconds later, and Kaino followed with another tough three. Tenyson Ramsey got a steal and hit a free throw to cut it to 60-53 at the 2:48 mark, by which time Ilwaco was clearly making a game of it.

Kaino drove right at the defense and scored through contact with 2:07 to cut it back to seven, but missed the free throw that would have completed the three-point play. Seconds later, Tenyson Ramsey snuck behind Adna’s ball-handler and knocked the ball toward half-court. Glenn gathered it and passed to Ramsey, who found Parker Kaech for the layup. Austen Apperson leapt to pass over a suffocating Kaino-Ramsey trap, but Glenn broke on the pass and got it to Kaino, who was fouled and hit one of two to cut it to 62-58 with 1:45 left.

With Ilwaco again down by six, Tynkila grabbed an offensive rebound, went into two defenders, jumped for a shot and got fouled with 54.6 seconds left. He hit one of two but chased down the offensive rebound and knocked it out of bounds off Adna. Kaino again went straight at the defense and got hit on the arm, making one of two free throws to cut it back to four with 45.2 seconds remaining.

Adna, which was beginning to find success with press-break plays, extended the lead to 68-60 with 35 seconds left. Kaech careened to the basket and hit a falling-down layup, prime Dwyane Wade-style, to cut it to six and keep Ilwaco and its frantic fan section hanging onto hope. But Adna’s Lyle Metzenberg hit three of four free throws over the final 19 seconds to close it out.

The loss ended Ilwaco’s season.
