ILWACO — Alex Kaino, on a scorching hot streak, dribbled across half-court, pulled up at the three-point line and hit. With over 2:00 remaining in the first quarter, he already had 16 points, and Ilwaco led 18-7, on its way to a 79-42 win over Pe Ell Friday, Jan. 18.

Kaino began the night rescuing an Ilwaco possession that appeared to be going nowhere. He examined his options as the shot clock wound before hitting a three from a few feet beyond the left bend in the arc. He pulled up from behind the free throw line for another tough shot for a 5-2 lead. Kaino drove by his defender and scored through contact for a three-point play, scored on a one-man break on a Trojan miss, and turned a Tenyson Ramsey outlet into another three-point play before punctuating his scoring tear with the brash pull-up triple.
Kaino kept pushing the pace. He created another break and found Parker Kaech for a basket with 28 seconds to go in the quarter. Ilwaco got it back for one last possession, on which Reese Tynkila snared an offensive rebound and hit a fade-away jumper at the buzzer for a 29-9 lead.
John Glenn opened the second quarter with a three-pointer from the corner.

Joe Nisbett dominated in the post in the second quarter with ten points. Tenyson Ramsey, who had nine assists, made plays with Nisbett, including a smooth pick-and-roll play ending with a Nisbett finger-roll. Ilwaco led 48-17 at the half.
Kaino’s buzzer-beating layup at the end of the third quarter marked his first points since the first quarter and gave Ilwaco a 68-31 lead. Jayden Turner scored his first five career points in the fourth.
Kaino finished the game with 18 points, while Nisbett and John Glenn each scored 17.
Ilwaco will visit North Beach Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. and visit Raymond Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
