MENLO — Star Erika Glenn went to the bench with her third foul just 3:08 into the game, the Lady Fishermen committed a sequence of turnovers, and Valley went on an 11-0 run to take a 21-9 lead early in the second quarter.

But Ilwaco found enough answers to keep its previously undefeated season intact, handing Valley its first loss 46-39 on Dec. 20.

Brooke Friese’s steal and three-point play late in the first quarter helped ignite Valley’s scoring run. The Vikings were getting past their defenders and put several Fishermen in quick foul trouble.

Ebby McMullen ended the Valley scoring run, flipping a bank shot in over her head in the post. Arianna Bell’s combative defense on the next possession forced a jump ball, leading to a shot clock violation on Valley.

Ilwaco slowly chipped away the rest of the half.

“We switched to our half-court zone trap to keep them in front of us and protect our players from foul trouble,” coach Ned Bittner said.

Estella Sheldon capped Ilwaco’s 13-1 run with a pump fake, drive and score to tie it at 22. Willapa Valley led 28-26 at half time.

In the second half, McMullen’s pull-up shot in the lane gave Ilwaco its first lead at 35-34. Sheldon stopped a Katelyn McGough drive, reaching back to swat the shot as McGough went by her for a layup attempt.

Bell knocked down a jump shot the other way to make it 37-34 going into the fourth. McMullen picked off a long baseline in-bounds pass intended for Hannah Cook and took it all the way for a layup to make it 42-34 with 6:24 to go.

McMullen finished with 10 points to lead Ilwaco’s balanced scoring.

Cook led Valley with 20 points.
