Orcas spotted in Columbia estuary

An orca partially breached in the Columbia River near the Astoria-Megler Bridge in this photo posted to social media May 6. Other orcas sightings have been reported in recent days from North Head Lighthouse, the observation tower at Point Adams and other locations near the river's mouth. Puget Sound-based orcas spend months each year hunting for Chinook salmon in this vicinity, while transient killer whales — which eat other marine mammals — also are sometimes seen here.
