NASELLE — Naselle’s affiliation with Columbia Virtual Academy (CVA) will soon come to an end after several years during which it provided an opportunity for on-line learning and bolstered enrollment totals for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District.
At their Jan. 16 monthly meeting, Superintendent Lisa Nelson told the school board the district was notified by CVA that it is dissolving partnerships with all partnering schools except Kettle Falls, effective at the end of the current school year. CVA is headquartered in Valley, Washington. NGRVSD has been a CVA partner school district since 2011.
Initially, Naselle’s CVA program was designed to be a K-12 online alternative learning experience. As CVA teacher requirements became more restrictive, the NGRVSD program was reduced to K-5.
In action items, the board approved buying Chromebook computers with Gear-Up supplemental grant funds for an amount not to exceed $12,400. In addition, a policy was adopted that will guide the Transitional Bilingual Instruction Program.
After discussion, proposed “Board/Superintendent Operating Principles” was pulled from the agenda to make a few edits and will be brought before the board at a future meeting.
Nelson provided a graph comparing budgeted enrollment versus actual enrollment. For the current school year, K-12 was budgeted at an assumed enrollment of 296. The actual enrollment is currently 336. Actual being greater than budgeted means the district will receive additional revenue over what it had originally planned. CVA was likewise budgeted for 18 and actual enrollment is 22. The Naselle Youth Camp School was budgeted at 76 students and actual enrollment is 82. Nelson noted the additional revenue brought in by increased enrollment will help to partially offset the expected revenue shortfall resulting from the passage of HB-2242 by the state legislature in 2017.
Nelson reported Naselle Comet Offensive Lineman Carson Bergeson was selected to the First Team All State for 1B and 2B schools.
The meeting was temporarily recessed, and the board entered into executive session for a discussion with legal counsel.
The next regular meeting of the Board will take place at 6:30 p.m. on February 20 in the Middle School Commons.
This report was prepared by School Board member Nick Nikkila.
