Humpbacks cavort in Columbia’s ocean plume

A composite photo shows a humpback whale observed Monday morning by a U.S. Coast Guard crew in the ocean off Cape Disappointment. Fishermen report seeing many of the whales in the offshore salmon grounds. Whales and salmon alike are attracted to the area by baitfish, which in turn are drawn by rich nutrients in the Columbia River's plume.
