- Surf perch caught off the Long Beach Peninsula make for delicious dining.
The Tuna Club in Ilwaco has informed me of some upcoming events for albacore fishermen.
• TV producer Phil Lander is working for Pilgrim Studios on a new show for the History Channel about commercial albacore fishermen in the Ilwaco/Astoria area of the “Pacific Graveyard.” They are casting the show now, and are looking for interesting boat captains with big personalities. If you are one and want to audition for the show, contact plander@pilgramstudios.com. This should be an interesting show with local fishermen on commercial albacore boats.
• On Saturday, May 29, Memorial Day weekend, the Tuna Club is planning on having “Fishermen’s Garage Sale,” open to the public. There will be lots fishing rods, lures, reels and many other items pertaining to the fishing and marine industry. There will be a barbecue starting at 5 p.m. The Tuna Club is located on the waterfront, the red building with the jumping marlin on the front, on Howerton Ave., Ilwaco.
• Albacore kickoff meeting: On Saturday, July 9, Tuna Club hosts a kick-off seminar for the tuna season, featuring tuna-fishing techniques, baiting schemes, U.S. Coast Guard safety tips, and questions and answers. The public is welcome and there is no charge.
Long Beach
guide service
All fishermen know what its like to fish a new area without the basic knowledge of where the fish are located, what is the best time to fish, what to use for bait. There is also the matter of outfitting yourself for success — it can be costly, not to mention the time lost just searching for the right combinations. Most successful fishermen know a great way to gain all this basic knowledge is to fish initially with a guide and learn the true secrets to catching local fish.
All this can be accomplished now by calling Long Beach Adventures at 541-212-8301 and speaking to Clark Von Essen, who personally runs the trips.
Clark grew up fishing in Southern California, fishing for tuna, marlin, dorado and anything else that swam. In 2004 he moved to the Northwest and tuned his skills to our local outdoors. During the summer from July through September he works on a tuna charter boat. For the remainder of the year, he’s concentrating on his business, Long Beach Adventures.
Von Essen spends all of his time in the outdoors, weather permitting, and is like the “energizer bunny.” He never stops moving and is the most personable guy you will ever meet. Some of the trips he offers include: North Jetty fishing, clamming, steamer clams, surf perch and steelhead fishing.
The trips are really economical. For instance, he will take six people clamming, supply all the gear including boots, clam guns, carry bags and clean all your clams. The cost for the trip is $150 for the whole group. For surf-perch fishing, he supplies rods, reels, waders, bait and cleans all the fish. The cost is $150 for a group of three and that includes sales tax.
