SEAVIEW — The Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau honored Monte Poe as its most-recent volunteer of the month.
Poe was born in Gaston, Oregon and spent his early life in Seaside, where he was known for his large collection of Elvis records. After high school he moved to Seattle and worked at Boeing. In 1960 he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Turkey for two years working as a radio spy monitoring Russian missile test ranges.
Poe returned to Oregon in 1964 and worked for Sawyers Viewmaster in Portland.
Monte met his wife Melody and married her in 1969. They have two children, Michael and Mindy and three granddaughters. The Poes bought their place in Ocean Park 19 years ago and moved here full-time.
Poe started working here at the visitors bureau back in 2004 so he has been a highly valuable volunteer for over 12 years.
“He goes above and beyond his duties, from picking up cases of brochures for us to showing up to work with a crockpot of chili. Monte has a wealth of knowledge about our area and is delighted to share it with our visitors,” the bureau said in a press release.
