OLYMPIA — High school juniors and seniors who are curious about careers in law enforcement will have an opportunity to attend “Cop Camp” this summer.
The Kiwanis are currently accepting applications for the 39th annual Yout Law Enforcement Camp. The week-long camp will take place at the Washington State Patrol Academy in Shelton, from July 10 to July 16.
According to an April 12 WSP press release, the purpose of the camp is to give selected students a chance to explore job opportunities in the law enforcement field. Students will get to try out the WSP driving course and firing range, and will get to explore forensics, SWAT, communications, canine and other areas of law enforcement. Additionally, students will learn about how officers handle the most common challenges they encounter on the job.
Police departments from around the state provide officers to instruct and serve as counselors. Guest speakers from various agencies provide a variety of perspectives, to help students learn about to federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies. Many students who attend this week-long camp go on to have careers in the criminal justice field.
Interested students can download the application and learn more about the camp at www.wsp.wa.gov/community/kiwanis.htm. The application deadline is May 6.
