WARRENTON — A 22-month-old toddler is in serious condition after being struck by a full-size van Friday morning in Warrenton.

Warrenton Police arrived to the scene at SW 9th Street and South Main Avenue and found witnesses assisting the young boy, who was under the vehicle.

The child was not trapped so he was moved to a Medix ambulance and immediately transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. The child’s mother accompanied the child in the ambulance.

The child has been transferred to a Portland-area hospital by Life Flight.

It appears the child ran into the roadway at about 8:39 a.m. from behind some landscaping bushes. A second child, the boy’s sister, was also on scene but was not involved in the crash and was not injured, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the police. There were two people who witnessed the incident and provided aid to the child.

One of the witnesses, John Meiners, a Warrenton School District bus driver and volunteer with the Lewis and Clark Fire Department, said he was finishing his morning bus route when he came across the scene.

“I was in Vietnam and I saw a lot of atrocities with children, but this just really got to me,” Meiners said.

Warrenton Fire Department also arrived on scene and the child was stabilized until Medix arrived.

The investigation continues and more information will be released in the coming days, Warrenton Police Chief Matt Workman said.

The driver has not been cited and no one has been taken into custody.

“At this time, the driver is cooperating and we are hoping the best for the child,” Workman said.
