Shoalwater Birders

OCEAN PARK  Shoalwater Birders will meet Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m., in the meeting room of the Ocean Park Library at 1308 256th Place. The speaker is Nancy Holman, visitor services manager at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. Nancy is a long-time birder and wildlife expert and will share her thoughts and observations with us. Partner meetings

ILWACO From noon to 1:30 p.m. on April 10, and the second Wednesday of each month, there will be a South Pacific County Partner meeting at the Columbia Education Center (GHC), at 208 Advent Ave., SE, in Ilwaco. The purpose of the meetings are to join interested parties in the community to discuss community needs, leverage resources and share whats happening within organizations. Caregivers support

LONG BEACH The caregiver support group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the PUD auditorium at 9610 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. The group is designed to provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are providing care to others. Student art show

ILWACO The Ilwaco High School Art Department is proud to present the 2013 Annual Art Show. This exhibit will show a range of work, from beginning work up through advanced, freshmen through seniors. This is a non-juried show; every art student was asked to contribute the piece they feel is their strongest from the 2012-13 school year, resulting in a show that demonstrates the variety of skill levels and interests of our students. Viewers of the show will have the opportunity to vote for the Peoples Choice award in two categories: Two-dimensional artwork, and three-dimensional artwork. The show will run April 2 until April 28 in the main gallery at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. They are closed Mondays and Thursdays are free admission. Please stop by and support IHS Art  no charge to view the show.

Office hour changes

LONG BEACH During the month of April, the hours of operation for the business office of the Long Beach Detachment of the Pacific County Sheriffs Office will be reduced to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday due to staff absence.

Neptune Classic Movies

Transits Board Meeting

SOUTH BEND  The Pacific Transit Authority Board will hold its regular quarterly board meeting on Thursday, April 11, at 10:30 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Pacific County Commissioners Meeting Room at 1216 W. Robert Bush Dr., South Bend. The public is invited to come and be heard.

Marine Resources Committee

SOUTH BEND The citizen-based Pacific County Marine Resource Committee meets the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., April 11 at the South Bend County Annex Building. This committee works to understand, steward, and restore the marine and estuarine ecological processes of the Washington coast in support of ecosystem health, sustainable marine resource-based livelihoods, cultural integrity, and coastal communities. Community carnival

ILWACO On April 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Ilwaco Middle/High School gym and cafeteria, there will be a community carnival. The event includes free games, food and fun and will showcase community organizations and promote community wellness. In addition there will be a dance for students in grades fifth through seventh during the carnival at the Boys and Girls Club. DAR & Dating photos

OCEAN PARK Do you have family portraits or photographs you have inherited with little or no information about the people, place or time depicted in these images? You are not alone. However, by using period indicators, you may be able to narrow the timeframe to a decade. Join the Daughters of American Revolution at 1 p.m., Friday, April 12 at the Ocean Park Library to find out a number of helpful hints for the general dating of images. Clamming

PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point from April 12 through April 14, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

School Auction

OCEAN PARK The Friends of Ocean Park School are excited to invite you to participate in their fourth annual online auction. This fundraising event will benefit the students of Ocean Park Elementary by providing them with enrichment activities and supplemental learning opportunities. OCEAN PARK On April 13 at the Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park all are welcome to come to a new show opening, with the theme Feathered Migration and Bird Art for Spring. Local artists are celebrating the third anniversary of the gallery with a reception for all from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus, local birder Mary Atherton will give a lecture on Peninsula birds from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on April 27 at the gallery. OCEAN PARK A First Aid/CPR class is scheduled for April 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Fire Station at 26109 Ridge Ave. The fee is $35. Anyone interested in taking the class should call 665-4451 to reserve a spot.

Family fun night

Archery meeting

LONG BEACH  Bear River Archers meet at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 13 at the Bear River Archery range located at 85th and Sandridge, next to Lone Fir Cemetery for a range maintenance gathering. Spring bazaar for food program

RAYMOND From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, the public is encouraged to come to the spring bazaar, at the Pacific County Senior Center, 324 Jackson Street in Raymond. Proceeds from the renting of tables at $10 each will support Senior Nutrition Program. Plus there will be a 50/50 raffle during the day. Come and get something for spring! Orchid Society meeting

ASTORIA  Sunset Empire Orchid Society meets at 2 p.m., April 14 at the First Lutheran Church at 725 33rd Avenue in Astoria. Bunco donations

KLIPSAN Donations are needed for the upcoming bunco tournament sponsored by the Peninsula Bunco Club. Large and small items as well as monetary donations are needed for door prizes and raffle baskets. The tournament will be held on Saturday, April 20, at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Relay food drive

RAYMOND On behalf of the Relay for Life of Willapa Bay, RHS senior Jack Bridgewater is organizing a food drive in the Raymond/South Bend area as his senior project. Canned food will be collected during the month of April. There will be food drop off points at Raymond Junior/Senior High School, Raymond Elementary, Everybodys Supermarket in Raymond, and Pioneer Grocery in South Bend. Donated food will be used during the luminaria ceremony at the Relay in June. All canned food will be donated to the Legacy Community Outreach Food Bank after Relay. Jacks goal is to collect 1,000 cans of food by the end of April! Please consider donating canned food to support this project, Relay For Life and the Legacy Community Outreach Food Bank.

Northwest Artist Guild

LONG BEACH Northwest Artist Guild presents the second workshop in its Brown Bag series for artists. Dian Schroeder will talk about Gallery Presentation and Framing How & Why on Wednesday, April 17, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Gallery 504 North located in the Peninsula Performing Arts Center, 504 N Pacific in Long Beach. Schroeder is an artist and member of the Northwest Artist Guild, Southwest Washington Watercolor Society as well as other regional art associations. She has shown her work in several northwest galleries and is herself a former gallery owner. This will be a come as you are informal presentation with time for questions. At 11 a.m. Kirsten Harvill from the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency will speak about Preparing and caring for a loved one in a disaster. At 1 p.m. Eric Nessa, from the Olympic Area Agency on Aging will share tools for self-care through his presentation entitled You are not alone in your caregiving journey. AAUW meeting

English tea

CATHLAMET St. James Family Center is hosting their annual English tea on April 20, with a royal theme marking the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Traditional recipes will be served on fine china and linen with fresh flowers. Tickets are $12 each with seatings at noon and 2 p.m. Reservations are recommended by calling 795-8612. In addition there will be a silent auction, spring plant sale and more.

Benefit auction

SKAMOKAWA On April 20, Redmen Hall will hold a sale of art from the estate of Janet Cimino, a well-known local collector. The sale is being held as a benefit for Tsuga Gallery, a gallery located in Cathlamet founded by Cimino for artists in Southwest Washington. Ciminos collection is primarily from the Pacific Northwest, but also includes many pieces from England and Japan. There is framed calligraphy by the English artist M. Adams; the Japanese collection includes antique silk embroidery, sumiyuri prints from the early 1700s, watercolors from the middle 1800s, and other beautiful pieces. There are also certified Duck Stamp paintings and other wildlife prints, and many works by nationally recognized regional artists, and much more. The sale will run until June 1, or until all the works are sold. Redmen Hall is located at 1394 SR-4, Skamokawa. All items are priced to sell and include a wide variety of items for every taste. Redmen Hall is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge but donations are greatly appreciated.

Shore birding @ the Coast

WILLAPA BAY  Interested birders are invited to gather at Lynn Point on Willapa Bay at 11 a.m., on April 25 to catch the best tides for seeing all the migrating shorebirds. There will be up to at least four hours of good viewing. The Grays Harbor Shore Bird Festival is April 26 through April 28, which coincides with this trip for those who might want to extend their birding into the weekend and join in the festivities. Spring art show

LONG BEACH Peninsula Arts Association is holding their 22nd annual Spring Art Show on April 26 through April 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, at the World Kite Museum at 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. The public is invited to vote for the shows Peoples Choice. There will be raffle sales with proceeds to the scholarship program and art enrichment programs. Forks over Knives

LONG BEACH Beginning at 4 p.m., April 27 and again on April 28 at the Chautauqua Lodge in Long Beach, the feature film Forks Over Knives will be shown. This incredible film is free and examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. Auction benefits grange

LONG BEACH On Saturday, April 27 beginning at 5 p.m., there will be a benefit auction at the grange. All proceeds go towards the maintenance fund to work to replace all of the windows in the building with more energy efficient windows plus various other maintenance issues. Spring Wreath Workshop

SURFSIDE On Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m., at the Surfside office grounds there will be a workshop on wreath making. Attendees will prep and plant various wreath frames with living succulents and flowering plants. The wreaths created will be up for raffle, and there will also be a number of door prizes and giveaways. If anyone has an empty frame that can be planted, bring it along. No admission will be charged.

Free shredding

LONG BEACH From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 27, the public is invited to shred private documents free of charge in the parking lot behind the Strand Insurance/Chinook Observer building, located at 205 Bolsad Avenue East in Long Beach. Protect your identity and shred obsolete tax documents, bank statements, cancelled checks, credit card documents, financial statements, insurance documents and more. This event is hosted by Strand Insurance, co-sponsored by Liberty Northwest and Safeco Insurance companies. Bring paper documents only, no need to remove paper clips, staples or binders. Fishing derby

ILWACO Registrations are now being accepted for the Black Lake Fishing Derby. The fishing derby will be held on April 27, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. There is no cost to participate in the event. Check-in for the fishing derby and a free pancake breakfast, courtesy of New Life Church, is at 7 a.m. The last registration is at 9:45 a.m., and final fish weigh-in will be at 10 a.m., followed by awards and a prize drawing. Hot dogs and refreshments donated by local area businesses will also be served by Carl and Terry Larson starting at 10 a.m. All participants of the fishing derby will receive a free T-shirt (guaranteed only with pre-registration) designed by logo contest winner Avary Murray, a second grader at Long Beach Elementary School, and a free gift courtesy of Ilwaco Fire Department. Razor clam festival

PENINSULA April 27 and April 28 there will be a razor clam festival in Long Beach. There will be a variety of fun events, including a chowder taste off, clam digging lessons and lots more. There will be prizes for biggest clam and the best looking limit. There will be bathing beauties of clam royalty, pirates, mermaids and more. Scrapbooking fundraiser

SOUTH BEND Willapa Harbor Hospital Relay for Life team is holding a scrapbooking fundraiser on April 27 at the South Bend Community Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $35 and includes lunch, snacks and drinks. There will be drawings, free goody-bags, access to die-cut and other tools. Not a scrapbooker? No problem. WASHINGTON Washington State Parks is honoring the 100th birthday of the park system by allowing free days with no Discover Pass required. Check out the parks website for dates. They include April 27 and April 28 (National Parks Week); June 1 (National Trails Day); June 8 and June 9 (National Get Outdoors Day); Aug. 4; Sept. 28 and Nov 9 through Nov. 11.

HS Graduate Scholarship Apps

OCEAN PARK  Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual High School Graduate Scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle-Grays River Valley school districts. Graduating seniors planning to pursue an education in the arts are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be homeschooled locally. Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply. Application deadline is April 19. PACIFIC COUNTY  Spring is just around the corner so its time to plan what you are going to plant, get ready for any large gardening projects youd like to do this year, or just visit with other gardeners. Circus in town

LONG BEACH The circus is coming to town. There will be two performances on Sunday, June 2, one at 2 p.m. and one a 4 p.m. Watch for more details about getting your ticket early. This event is sponsored by the Long Beach Lions Club.

Golf tournament

SURFSIDE Surfside will be hosting a Bucket Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 8, at the Surfside Golf Course at 31508 J Place in Ocean Park. The entry fee is $50 per player, and includes an 18-hole green fee, lunch, prizes and a hat for each entrant. Players can sign up as a team or as an individual and be placed with a group. Four Person Scramble with registration at 9 a.m., Shot Gun start at 10 a.m. Rental carts are available but you need to call 665-4148 to reserve yours. Net proceeds will go to the 2013 Surfside Scholarship Fund to benefit a graduating Ilwaco High School senior.
