Tsunami classes
NASELLE Pacific County Emergency Management Association is hosting five workshops around the county starting March 13 at 6 p.m., at the Naselle Timberland Library. The tsunami workshops will discuss how they work, what they do and what we need to before, during and after one. Topics to be discussed include tsunami science, the emergency alert system, historic tsunami events as well as local preparation, response and recovery. Additional workshop will be held in the Timberland Libraries as follows: at 5:30 p.m., March 20 in South Bend; at noon on March 23 in Ocean Park; at 6 p.m., March 26 in Raymond; and at 11 a.m., March 30 in Ilwaco.

LONG BEACH Bring your brown bag lunch and come to Peninsula Performing Arts Center at 504 North Pacific in Long Beach on Wednesday, March 13, at 12:30 p.m., for the first in its series of Brown Bag Workshops for artists. Michele Naquaiya of Ocean Park will be speaking about Submitting Your Portfolio. This is an important aspect of any artists life if they are interested in inclusion in any show or gallery where distance is a factor. Many shows require your art to be in digital form to be considered for a show, contest or gallery. Michele is not only skilled with different aspects of the computer, but she is an accomplished scratchboard artist and watercolorist. These events will be held monthly and should be around an hour long, so you can take your lunch break and be informed at the same time.
Columbia River Community Conversation
SKAMOKAWA Columbia Riverkeeper is hosting a Lower Columbia River Community Conversation on Wednesday, March 13 at the Skamokawa Grange from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Join fellow community members to learn about local Columbia River issues and discuss solutions. This evening event will feature presentations on Columbia River water quality and new limits on toxic pollution as well as issues surrounding the use of the Columbia River as a fossil fuel highway. There will also be a moderated, open-forum discussion about local concerns and practical solutions. The Columbia River faces unprecedented new proposals to export coal, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and crude oil to Asia. How will the new pipelines, trains, and tankers impact the estuary? Current plans could make the Columbia River the nations largest exporter of coal, LNG and oil. Community members are encouraged to raise additional concerns and opportunities. Sheriff Dept. community meetings
SOUTH BEND Pacific County Sheriffs Office will hold a series of community meetings within local communities so that members of the office can visit directly with the people they serve. Sheriff Johnson and other members of the department to share what is new and encourage attendees to participate in discussion on how they can better serve you. Bunco donations
KLIPSAN Donations are needed for the upcoming bunco tournament sponsored by the Peninsula Bunco Club. Large and small items as well as monetary donations are needed for door prizes and raffle baskets. The tournament will be held on Saturday, April 20, at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Chronic Disease Self-Management Classes
OCEAN PARK Teaching patients to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming Living Well with Chronic Conditions workshops to be held at the Family Worship Center located at 26310 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park. Classes will be held for two and a half hours once a week for six weeks on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. through April 11. The course, developed by the Stanford Patient Education Research Center, is designed to enhance regular treatment by teaching patients how to manage their illnesses, carry out normal day-to-day activities, manage emotional changes and create their own personalized action plan to help them achieve their individual goals. Blues jam
LONG BEACH The second Thursday of each month there will be a Stormy Thursday Blues Jam at the Pickled Fish on Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Drums and microphones provided, just bring your amp and your axe, horn, harmonica, voice or whatever you like to use to create music. The first jam will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., March 14. Quilt show
ILWACO The 18th annual Peninsula Quilt Guild exhibit is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16, and from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 17 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. This event is sponsored by the Peninsula Quilt Guild. Admission is free. The Peninsula Quilt Guild has 55 members and includes some of the areas most talented fabric artists. The exhibition will have quilts of all types and sizes with over 100 quilts on display in three galleries, all donated by members of the Quilt Guild. Raffle tickets for the Beach Wedding prize quilt will be available throughout the show at a cost of $1 per ticket. The drawing will be held on Sunday afternoon, and it is not necessary to be present to win. Proceeds from the ticket sales go to various charitable organizations on the Peninsula and in Pacific County. For more information call 642-3446.

OCEAN PARK Community Table free lunch program needs your help. The all volunteer hot lunch program prepares about 100 meals each week at a cost of $2 per meal, with 100 percent of your tax deductible donation going to provide a hot meal for your neighbors in Ocean Park and nearby. NOAA Weather Radio Event
RAYMOND The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is coordinating with the Washington Emergency Management Division to host a NOAA weather radio program on Thursday, March 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Grays Harbor College Riverview Education Center at 600 Washington Avenue in Raymond. The program is designed to educate the public on the warnings and alerts that may be issued from the National Weather Service. Program participants will learn important information about tsunamis and how to make a home preparedness kit during a presentation by the Washington State Emergency Management Division. Participants may be eligible to receive a NOAA weather radio at no cost. All Pacific County residents are welcome to attend this training; however, radios are limited to the first 50 residents who meet the specified income levels. Programming assistance will be provided. The Wizard of Oz auditions
CHINOOK Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) will be performing The Wizard of Oz directed by Barbara Poulshock on the weekends of July 12 through Aug. 4 at the historic Fort Columbia Theater in Chinook. Auditions for the roles will take place on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sunday, March 24, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Fort Columbia Theater. Empty Bowls
SEAVIEW From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 23, all are encouraged to come support the Empty Bowls project at the Peninsula Church Center located at 5000 N Place in Seaview. There is a $10 suggested donation for a handmade bowl filled with handmade soup donated by area restaurants. All proceeds are donated to local charities that feed the hungry, including His Supper Table, Community Table and FISH. Boating Safety Class
CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a boating safety class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on March 23 at the National Motor Lifeboat School at Cape Disappointment. The focus for this class will be on the requirements of the boaters education card. All persons in the state of Washington who are 12 to 50 years of age must have the card to operate a power-driven vessel with an engine that is 15-horsepower or more. On Jan. 1, 2014, all boaters who were born after 1955 must have this card. Now is the time to get this out of the way. The is for the class and materials is $10. SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Republicans will hold their annual Lincoln Day dinner on Saturday, March 23, at the Willapa Harbor Community Center at First and Alder streets in South Bend. The social hour, with silent auction and raffle, begins at 5 p.m., the prime rib dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Prominent gun rights activist Alan Gottlieb will be the featured speaker. All conservatives, hunters and gun owners are invited to for an evening of fine speakers, fellowship and dinner. LONG BEACH The Washington Dental Service Foundation SmileMobile is coming to Long Beach from March 25 through March 29. Children birth through high school with limited access to care can be scheduled by calling Kristi Curtis at the Ocean Beach Early Childhood Center before March 25 at 642-5471. The SmileMobile is staffed by a clinic manager, dentist and dental assistant and teams of local volunteer dental professionals. It will be located at Head Start 2611 N. Pacific Hwy., in Long Beach. Sponsored by the Washington Dental Service and in partnership with Seattle Childrens Hospital, the SmileMobile provides dental care to children from low-income families. Medicaid and sliding scale fee is accepted as reimbursement for services. The SmileMobile is operated by Washington Dental Service Foundation, a non-profit organization created and partially funded by Washington Dental Service and in partnership with Seattle Childrens Hospital.

ILWACO The Ilwaco class of 2013 is selling hanging baskets and color flower bowls to benefit their 2013 Substance Free Graduation Party. All orders must be in by March 30. HS Graduate Scholarship Apps
OCEAN PARK Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual High School Graduate Scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle-Grays River Valley school districts. Graduating seniors planning to pursue an education in the arts are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be homeschooled locally. Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply. Application deadline is April 19.
