LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks holds bunco the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. LONG BEACH On March 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Northwest Artist Guild announces their March First Saturday art show and reception at Gallery 504 North, located in the Peninsula Performing Arts Center at 504 N Pacific in Long Beach. Featured artist Dian Schroeder will share her Sense of Place through her watercolor landscapes and waterscapes. Whether representational or impressionistic, through her paintings Dian exhibits her love of vivid color and the changing light and feel of the coastal seasons. Ducks Unlimited Banquet & Fundraiser
ASTORIA The 36th annual banquet of the North Coast Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. This year also marks the 75th Anniversary of Ducks Unlimiteds mission to protect, enhance, restore and manage important wetlands for the benefit of North American waterfowl. The event includes an excellent barbeque dinner, live and silent auctions and assorted raffles and games of chance. Wildlife art, carved decoys, firearms and useful merchandise are featured. About 40 guns will be auctioned or given away. Regular ticket price is $45. Special ticket packages are available for youths, significant others and sponsors. All tickets include the dinner, DU membership and magazine and a chance at the door prize gun. Heavenly hats
RAYMOND My name is Mariah Jenkins and I am a senior at Raymond High School. For my senior project I will be working with Heavenly Hats by collecting and sending brand-new hats of all kinds to those heroes of all ages who have lost their hair due to treatment of cancer or the many other medical conditions, which may cause hair loss. They can be any style of hat; baby hats, soft hats, childrens hats, baseball caps, etc. Note: All hats that are donated need to be brand-new due to the low immune systems of their recipients; monetary donations are also accepted. The collection bins will be located at Raymond High School, Raymond Elementary, South Bend Pharmacy, Sagens Pharmacy and Willapa Harbor Hospital. The bins will be at their designated locations March 4 through March 18. Hats or donations can also be sent to Raymond High School, 1016 Commercial St., Raymond, WA 98577. Chronic Disease Self-Management Classes
OCEAN PARK Teaching patients to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming Living Well with Chronic Conditions workshops to be held at the Family Worship Center located at 26310 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park. Classes will be held for two and a half hours once a week for six weeks on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting March 7 and ending April 11. The course, developed by the Stanford Patient Education Research Center, is designed to enhance regular treatment by teaching patients how to manage their illnesses, carry out normal day-to-day activities, manage emotional changes and create their own personalized action plan to help them achieve their individual goals. LONG BEACH The Willapacific Branch of the AAUW will present its annual Treasures of Time tea celebrating womens history month and the achievements of women on March 9 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. This year they will be celebrating the wisdom passed on to us by our grandmothers in a presentation called A Grandmothers Gift. All proceeds benefit the AAUW Young Womens Scholarship Fund for Ilwaco High School and presentations of awards will take place at the tea. WASHINGTON Daylight saving time starts on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. Clocks should be turned forward one hour. This is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
Japan Tsunami Remembrance
LONG BEACH A Japan Tsunami Remembrance event is scheduled to begin at noon on March 10 at the World Kite Museum. The purpose of this event is to remember the Japanese people and applaud their resilience and recovery after the enormous 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami two years ago. People are encouraged to visit the World Kite Museum to look at the Japanese kite display and to make an origami crane or two. In Japanese legend, making 1,000 origami cranes brings eternal good luck or a wish. To bring luck to Japan, people are invited to make cranes at the museum before or after the event. The cranes will be displayed through the middle of June. If you are interested in making cranes prior to the event, a template and instructions are available on the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PCEMA. Handgun Safety
ASTORIA Clatsop Community College regularly offers classes on handgun safety through its Workforce Training and Continuing Education Program. Participants learn handgun safety and receive the training necessary to apply for a concealed weapon permit. Participants must pre-register. The next class date will be conducted on Tuesday, March 12, from 7 p.m. to 9:50 p.m., in Towler Hall on the CCC main campus at 1660 Lexington Avenue. The cost for the class is $65. Tsunami classes
NASELLE Pacific County Emergency Management Association is hosting five workshops around the county starting March 13 at 6 p.m., at the Naselle Timberland Library. The tsunami workshops will discuss how they work, what they do and what we need to do before, during and after one. Topics to be discussed include tsunami science, the emergency alert system, historic tsunami events as well as local preparation, response and recovery. Additional workshop will be held in the Timberland Libraries as follows: at 5:30 p.m., March 20 in South Bend; at noon on March 23 in Ocean Park; at 6 p.m., March 26 in Raymond; and at 11 a.m., March 30 in Ilwaco.

SOUTH BEND Pacific County Sheriffs Office will hold a series of meetings within local communities so that members of the office can visit directly with the people they serve. Sheriff Johnson and other members of the department will share what is new and encourage attendees to participate in discussions on how they can better serve you. Quilt show
ILWACO The 18th annual Peninsula Quilt Guild exhibit is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16, and from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 17 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. This event is sponsored by the Peninsula Quilt Guild. Admission is free. The Peninsula Quilt Guild has 55 members and includes some of the areas most talented fabric artists. The exhibition will have quilts of all types and sizes with over 100 quilts on display in three galleries, all donated by members of the Quilt Guild. Raffle tickets for the Beach Wedding prize quilt, will be available throughout the show at a cost of $1 per ticket. The drawing will be held on Sunday afternoon, and it is not necessary to be present to win. Boating Safety Class
CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a boating safety class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on March 23 at the National Motor Lifeboat School at Cape Disappointment. The focus for this class will be on the requirements of the boaters education card. All persons in the state of Washington who are 12 to 50 years of age must have the card to operate a power-driven vessel with an engine that is 15-horsepower or more. On Jan. 1, 2014, all boaters who were born after 1955 must have this card. Now is the time to get this out of the way. The is for the class and materials is $10. HS Graduate Scholarship Apps
OCEAN PARK Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual High School Graduate Scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle-Grays River Valley school districts. Graduating seniors planning to pursue an education in the arts are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be homeschooled locally. Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply. Application deadline is April 19.
