Baby shower

    ASTORIA St. Marys Catholic Church in Seaview is having a baby shower, potluck and bingo in support of the Pregnancy Resource Center Door of Hope  (located in Astoria), on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 11:30 a.m.  Anyone attending is asked to bring an unwrapped item such as diapers for newborns and sizes four, five and six; sleepers, any color, in sizes 0 to 3, 3 to 6, and 6 month sizes; diaper bags in neutral colors; toys and rattles; socks for boys; cute coming-home-from-the-hospital outfits for babies; or white, rectangular laundry baskets for layettes.  Patty Dunn, executive director of the Door of Hope will speak briefly about the centers program.  Please call Janet Easley at 665-5580 with questions.

Paul Buck Stierle

    TOKELAND Mr. Tambourine Man, Paul Buck Stierle plays guitar and sings songs from Bob Dylans early years at a free performance at the Shoalwater Bay Tribal gym (located across from the Tokeland Post Office) on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The show begins at 4:30 p.m. Stierle focuses on Dylans early hits, from 1962 to 1974, and traces Dylans progress through folk music, protest song, folk rock and rock-n-roll to country rock and Christian music. Diabetes Support Group

    ILWACO  The next meeting of the Diabetes Support Group with the topic of The Personal Side of Diabetes, presented by Heather A. Bee, Psy.D is set for 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Ocean Beach Hospital meeting rooms. The meeting is free to public. For questions call 642-6314.

Events seminar

    CHINOOK  In a collaborative effort between Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau, city of Long Beach Tourism and Events, and Long Beach Merchants Association there will be an Events Seminar on Feb. 20 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Chinook School gymnasium. This presentation is geared toward new event chairs and organizers and those aspiring to leadership or wanting refresher information. On the agenda will be Event Chair Guidelines including subjects like leadership structure, timelines, budgeting and finance, volunteer recruitment, training, coordination, and retention, promotion and advertising, and more! Following the presentation there will be small group break outs to exchange best practices. Pizza and beverages will be provided during the dinner break. Bunco for Food4Kids

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks holds bunco the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. This program provides a backpack with food for needy kids to take home on Fridays so they have something to eat on the weekend. If you have questions call 642-8244.

Mardi Gras coming

    ILWACO On Saturday, Feb. 23, Ocean Beach Hospital Foundation will be holding their annual auction as a Mardi Gras-themed, fantastic celebration, in lieu of their usual holiday Celebration of Lights. Stew Lunch & Bazaar

    GRAYS RIVER  The Grays River Friendship Circle stew lunch and bazaar is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Feb. 23. This event is usually held in the fall, but this year it is being held when things are a little less hectic. Along with the hearty beef stew attendees will enjoy delectable cheese bread, beverages and dessert. All are welcome to this event at Grays River United Methodist Church social hall.  There will be a bake sale at the same time, with offer crafts, original artwork and some resale items. The bazaar begins at 10 a.m., with lunch starting at 11 a.m., and continuing till 4 p.m., takeout meals available. The meal is by donation, and the crafts and baked goods are reasonably priced. Discovery Garden/Mariners Memorial Park

    ILWACO Join in an educational and fun day on Saturday, Feb. 23, as the revitalization of the Museum Discovery Garden begins! Master Gardener Rachel Gana will lead a clinic and pruning demonstration at Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the hands-on pruning practice is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshop is open to the public and free of charge. If you are planning to practice pruning on the gardens shrubs/trees, dont forget to bring your favorite pruning tools! Dress for the weather and bring your own nibbles. If you have plant questions or problems, come ask a master gardener. The group will also be sponsoring a plant clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum. Tree Planting at Ellsworth Creek

    WILLAPA BAY On Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 and again on March 2 and March 3, hearty volunteers needed to help plant native trees at The Nature Conservancys Ellsworth Creek preserve near Willapa Bay. Terrain can be steep and slippery so participants must be able-bodied and willing to work in any kind of weather. Pick one day or a whole weekend to volunteer. Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Neighbors helping neighbors

    OCEAN PARK Community Table free lunch program needs your help. The all volunteer hot lunch program prepares about 100 meals each week at a cost of $2 per meal, with 100 percent of your tax deductible donation going to provide a hot meal for your neighbors in Ocean Park and nearby. Heavenly hats

    RAYMOND My name is Mariah Jenkins and I am a senior at Raymond High School. For my senior project I will be working with Heavenly Hats by collecting and sending brand new hats of all kinds to those heroes of all ages who have lost their hair due to treatment of cancer or the many other medical conditions, which may cause hair loss. They can be any style of hat; baby hats, soft hats, childrens hats, baseball caps, etc. Note all hats that are donated need to be brand new due to the low immune systems of their recipients; donations are also accepted. The collection bins will be located at Raymond High School, Raymond Elementary, South Bend Pharmacy, Sagens Pharmacy, and Willapa Harbor Hospital. The bins will be at their designated locations March 4 through March 18. Hats or donations can also be sent to Raymond High School, 1016 Commercial St., Raymond, WA 98577. Mental Health & Law Enforcement

    SEAVIEW Long Beach Police Chief Flint Wright will be the guest speaker for the February meeting of NAMI Pacific County, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 26. This program, free and open to anyone, is being held in the Memorial Room of the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. Chief Wright, a local native, has been a longtime advocate for the health and safety of residents of all ages. He sees at close hand the dangerous mix of substance use, unsafe homes, mental health problems and the decreased support for basic services to address these issues. Sustainable Salmon

    ABERDEEN  The Board of Directors of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Port of Grays Harbor, 111 S. Wooding, Aberdeen. The Board meeting is open to the public and public participation is always welcome. Sense of Place

    LONG BEACH On March 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Northwest Artist Guild announces their March First Saturday art show and reception at Gallery 504 North, located in the Peninsula Performing Arts Center at  504 N Pacific Long Beach. Featured  artist Dian Schroeder will share her Sense of Place through her watercolor landscapes and waterscapes. Whether representational or impressionistic, Dian exhibits through her paintings her love of vivid color and the changing light and feel of the coastal seasons. Chronic Disease Self-Management Classes

    OCEAN PARK Teaching patients to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming Living Well with Chronic Conditions workshops to be held at the Family Worship Center located at 26310 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park. Classes will be held for two and a half hours once a week for six weeks on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting March 7 and ending April 11. The course, developed by the Stanford Patient Education Research Center, is designed to enhance regular treatment by teaching patients how to manage their illnesses, carry out normal day-to-day activities, manage emotional changes and create their own personalized action plan to help them achieve their individual goals. Smitty gathering

    OCEAN PARK The Peninsula Senior Center will host a potluck memorial celebration of life for Harrison Smitty Smith on Saturday, Mar. 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome. Daylight saving time

    WASHINGTON Daylight saving time starts on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. Clocks should be turned forward one hour. This is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Tsunami remembrance

    LONG BEACH At noon on Sunday, March 10, the public is invited to observe the anniversary of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, Tsunami Remembrance Day at the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame. The event schedule includes a mayors welcome and brief explanation of the event, guest kite flyers, a presentation of tsunami photos and stories, and making kites and cranes. Attendees will also have the opportunity to go to the beach and fly their kites with the professionals. Once at the beach, there will be a moment of silence while looking out over the Pacific Ocean towards Japan.

Handgun Safety

    ASTORIA Clatsop Community College regularly offers classes on handgun safety through its Workforce Training and Continuing Education Program. Participants learn handgun safety and receive the training necessary to apply for a concealed weapon permit. Participants must pre-register. The next class date will be conducted on Tuesday, March 12, from 7 p.m. to 9:50 p.m., in Towler Hall on the CCC main campus at 1660 Lexington Avenue. The cost for the class is $65. Tsunami classes

    NASELLE Pacific County Emergency Management Association is hosting five workshops around the county starting March 13 at 6 p.m., at the Naselle Timberland Library. The tsunami workshops will discuss how they work, what they do and what we need to before, during and after one. Topics to be discussed include tsunami science, the emergency alert system, historic tsunami events as well as local preparation, response and recovery. Additional workshop will be held in the Timberland Libraries as follows: at 5:30 p.m., March 20 in South Bend; at noon on March 23 in Ocean Park; at 6 p.m., March 26 in Raymond; and at 11 a.m., March 30 in Ilwaco.

HS Graduate Scholarship Apps

    OCEAN PARK  Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual High School Graduate Scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle-Grays River Valley school districts. Graduating seniors planning to pursue an education in the arts are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA.  Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be homeschooled locally. Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply. Application deadline is April 19.
