Chinook Food Bank

Water exercise class

    OCEAN PARK The public is invited to try a new water exercise class at Dunes Pool beginning Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. The cost is $30 for eight classes. Enjoy the comfort and benefits of working out in the water. The class is suitable for anybody who is looking to improve cardio, strength, endurance and flexibility. Swimming skills are not required. Governors ball

    OLYMPIA  The Governors Inaugural Ball will take place at the state Capitol building at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16. Everyone is invited to this event. There will be music, dancing, entertainment and food from the Washington State Chefs Association as well as a special wine made just for the ball. This years balls theme is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Temple of Justice. No tax help

    OCEAN PARK Because there are not enough volunteers this year there will not be free help for seniors and low-income taxpayers through the library.

Living well workshop

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Beach Hospital in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging (O3A) continues their free workshop, Living Well With Chronic Conditions. This workshop will be held on Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., for six consecutive weeks. The classes will be held on Jan. 17, Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 14 at the Family Worship Center at 264th and Ridgeway in Ocean Park. This program is designed to help anyone who suffers from a chronic condition, including diabetes, asthma, heart disease, chronic pain, arthritis and hypertension just to name a few; to lessen their stress and frustration, manage symptoms and deal with fatigue. The goal of the program is to help these individuals live a healthy life even with chronic conditions by managing symptoms. Those who are caring for someone with a chronic condition are also encouraged to attend. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Neighbors helping neighbors

    OCEAN PARK The Community Table free lunch program needs your help. The all volunteer hot lunch program prepares about 100 meals each week at a cost of $2 per meal, with 100 percent of your tax deductible donation going to provide a hot meal for your neighbors in Ocean Park and nearby. Saturday, Jan. 19

Crab feed

    LONG BEACH Ilwaco Sports Boosters will host their annual fundraising crab feed Saturday, Jan. 19 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge, 110 Pacific Avenue North in Long Beach. The one-crab dinner is $15 and includes French bread and coleslaw. The two-crab dinner is $25. Hot dogs are also available for $2. All money raised goes to help the sports programs at Ilwaco High School.

Beach cleanup

    PENINSULA There will be a beach cleanup event beginning at 9:30 a.m., on Jan. 19 at any major beach approach. The evening before at 4:30 p.m., clean up materials will be distributed and then at 5 p.m., a potluck with a guest speaker will be held on Jan. 18, at the Peninsula Baptist Church, 23802 Pacific Way in Ocean Park. The topic will be an update from the Department of Ecology. After the cleanup there will be a volunteers soup feed at the Ocean Park Moose Lodge at 25915 U Street.

Windless kites festival

    LONG BEACH  Its time for the annual windless kites festival showcasing the amazing talents of Scott Davis and Toby Arnt in the Long Beach Elementary School gymnasium at 400 S. Washington Street. Flying will happen from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 19 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Jan. 20. Living history program

    ASTORIA  Lewis and Clark National Historical Park presents a special living history program on Saturday, Jan. 19 and Sunday,       Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. During this two-day Wintering Over event, visitors are encouraged to converse with expedition members (portrayed by first-person character interpreters) camped at their Fort Clatsop winter headquarters in 1806. Visitors will start with a brief orientation that will introduce the story of the Corps of Discovery and prepare them to participate in the program. In addition to this event at the fort, movies in the visitor center theater will be offered each hour. Blind Goddess

Cheerleading clinic

    ILWACO As part of her senior project Keiana Yasanaka is hosting a cheerleading clinic in the old high school cafeteria on the Black Lake complex. Camp dates are Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., with a performance date set for Jan. 25. The cost is $28 per participant, which includes the clinic and a T-shirt. Flu shots

    LONG BEACH Flu shots are offered by the Pacific County Health Department, 7013 Sandridge Road, on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and are $25. Shots also are available for $30 at Ilwaco Pharmacy. In addition, the health department has scheduled a walk-in clinic for flu shots on Jan. 31 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Shots will be billed to Medicare and Medicaid enrollees. Flu infections are on a sharp upswing in Western Washington and across the nation this winter. Shots are recommended for everyone.

Mindfulness & chili

    SEAVIEW Astoria mental health expert Debora Stout comes to Seaview for a community education talk on Mindfulness, Tuesday evening, Jan. 22. The free event includes a chili supper followed by Ms. Stouts presentation and discussion. It will be from 6 p.m. to    7:30 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center social hall, 5000 N Place in Seaview. Members of NAMI Pacific and the Wellspring Mental Health Team will be providing chili, cornbread and cookies for dessert. Anyone attending is encouraged to bring a food item for the local food bank. Mindfulness is increasingly used by people of all ages, health professionals and spiritual teachers as a way to lower stress and improve skills in experiencing the present moment. Stout brings to this event well over a decade of experience as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Point in Time Count

    PACIFIC COUNTY The Homelessness Housing and Assistance Act requires each county to conduct an annual Point in Time Count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons in Washington state. The Crisis Support Network will conduct the Point in Time Count on Thursday, Jan. 24. E-reader Road show

    RAYMOND   Raymond Timberland Library presents E-reader Road Show from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Jan. 24 for adults and teens. Get the lowdown on downloadable e-books available through your local library. A short presentation will walk you through the basic steps to borrow e-books. After the talk, individuals will have a chance to try out some mobile devices, including both standard e-readers and tablets (Nook HD, Samsung Galaxy 2 7.0 and Kindle Fire). Library staff will be on hand to consult with patrons who already own devices or are in the process of deciding whether to buy one. Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Jan. 25 through Jan. 27, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

OBH support group

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Members of the hospitals chemotherapy team will facilitate the meeting. Current and past cancer patients and their families are encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 642-6327.

Old Time Loggers Reunion

    NASELLE  Appelo Archives Center at 1056 State Route 4 in Naselle, is pleased to sponsor the third annual Old Time Loggers Reunion on Saturday, Jan. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. This event is intended to bring together loggers of all ages and their families, as well as community members who want to honor the logging industrys history in the Lower Columbia. Everyone who was, or still is, involved in the timber industry is encouraged to come. While there is no cost to attend, they always appreciate a donation to the center.

Peninsula Has Talent

    ILWACO  Dust off your dancing shoes and tune up that tuba, it is time for the Peninsula Players annual Peninsula Has Talent competition and a chance to compete for the prize of $250. There will be a number of performers and local celebrity judges. Come to the preliminary judging on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 1 at the River City Playhouse at 127 Lake Street SE in Ilwaco. Womens Heart to Heart lunch

    LONG BEACH Dr. Pattie Malone, Ocean Beach Hospital Emergency Department director, will be one of three speakers featured at the annual Womens Heart to Heart lunch, Feb. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. The Heart of a Woman is the theme of this years forum, which focuses on the unique health issues women face. In addition to Malone, other speakers will include Jennifer Vedenoja, EMT-P, a local emergency services provider, and Julie Miller, RN from Olympia, a cardiac event survivor. New Sid Snyder book

    ILWACO Across the Aisles: Sid Snyders Remarkable Life in Groceries & Government, written by Jeff Burlingame, will be launched at The Artisan at Ilwaco from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 2. Part of Washington states Legacy Project, the book chronicles the remarkable life and achievements of the coasts favorite state senator, the man dubbed the governor of Southwest Washington. In addition to being available at the book launch, books will also be sold at Sids Market and Time Enough Books. Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is doing a photo exhibit on Sid to correspond with the book launch.

Girls Circle

    SEAVIEW The Boys & Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula is proud to announce Girls Circle Facilitator Training to be held Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview. The club was awarded a millage grant in winter 2012, allowing the training to come to the Peninsula. Girls Circle is a program that promotes healthy relationships and resiliency for girls ages 9 to 18 in a safe space. This program is vital to the livelihoods of local girls and young women, providing activities that help strengthen and build relationships, body image and healthy habits. The training is free to Pacific County residents and lasts from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both days. The training provides the foundation to be hired to facilitate the program, which will potentially happen four times throughout the year, once during the summer and three times during the school year. Tsunami train-the-trainer

    ILWACO  The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) is offering a free tsunami public education course on Feb. 14, at the Grays Harbor College Columbia Education Center at 208 Advent Ave. S.E. in Ilwaco. The course will be from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Workbooks will be provided.  Topics for the course include: near and far source tsunami events and scenarios, the Cascadia Subduction Zone, tsunami modeling, inundation mapping in Washington state, local vulnerabilities, emergency management systems, tsunami response, how to reduce risks, and community training.  Anyone interested in participating must pre-register with AmeriCorps member Kirsten Harvill by calling 875-9409 or 642-9409 or email kharvill@co.pacific.wa.us.

Student Photographers

    WASHINGTON  The Professional Photographers of Washington is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the 2013 Student Photographer of the Year Award, which is open to all high school seniors in Washington state graduating in the year 2013.   One student will receive the $2,000 scholarship grant, which will be used to further the applicants study in the photographic arts. A panel of professional photographers who are members of the Professional Photographers of Washington will select the finalists. The Student Photographer of the Year will be chosen based upon photographic and scholastic studies, and the students wish to continue their studies in the photographic arts. The application postmarked deadline is March 16 and the winner will be announced in June.
