Thursday, Jan. 10

Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Jan. 10 through Jan. 12, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Transit board meeting

    LONG BEACH The Pacific Transit Authority Board meets on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m., in the Pacific County administrative building at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. The public is invited to come and be heard.

Book discussion

    RAYMOND Raymond Timberland Library welcomes adults for a book discussion from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 10. Living well workshop

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Beach Hospital in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging (O3A) has scheduled a free workshop open to the public entitled, Living Well With Chronic Conditions. This workshop will be held on Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., for six consecutive weeks. The classes will be held on Jan. 10, Jan. 17, Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 14 at the Family Worship Center at 264th and Ridgeway in Ocean Park. Two specifically trained leaders will facilitate the workshop. This program is designed to help anyone who suffers from a chronic condition, including diabetes, asthma, heart disease, chronic pain, arthritis and hypertension just to name a few; to lessen their stress and frustration, manage symptoms and deal with fatigue. The goal of the program is to help these individuals live a healthy life even with chronic conditions by managing symptoms. Those who are caring for someone with a chronic condition are also encouraged to attend. Each participant will have access to a Living Well With Chronic Conditions book. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Neighbors helping neighbors

    OCEAN PARK The Community Table free lunch program needs your help. The all volunteer hot lunch program prepares about 100 meals each week at a cost of $2 per meal, with 100 percent of your tax deductible donation going to provide a hot meal for your neighbors in Ocean Park and nearby. Emergency Preparedness Fair

    RAYMOND  The Willapa Valley Grange is sponsoring a free community Emergency Preparedness Fair on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Grange Hall located at 290 Camp One Road in Raymond. Speakers include: Kevin Howerton, who will address safely generating power during an outage; Senja Antilla will discuss organizing your vital documents; and Jeanette Sterling will speak about preparing for your pets safety in response to disaster. PAA meeting

    LONG BEACH  Peninsula Arts Association will hold their general membership meeting on Jan. 15, at 6 p.m.  All monthly meetings are held at the green and white PAA office, located just behind the Old Depot Building and directly north of the Dennis Company in Long Beach. January is membership month; fees are $20 annually and all the forms to join as a new membership or to renew are available on PAAs website (www.beachartist.org) or call 665-6041 to have a form mailed.  Topics of discussion at the meeting include the Spring Art Show, NW Garlic Poster Contest, and the new plan of class and workshops at the PAA office, the 2013 budget and an overview of the year. PAPA meeting

    LONG BEACH Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m., at the Flood Farm, 18620 Pacific Way. Look for the Flood Farm sign. PAPA was formed in 2008 to bring family friendly productions to the Peninsula as well as providing a vehicle for social interaction and intellectual and emotional growth. Water exercise class

    OCEAN PARK The public is invited to try a new water exercise class at Dunes Pool beginning Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. The cost is $30 for eight classes. Enjoy the comfort and benefits of working out in the water. The class is suitable for anybody who is looking to improve cardio, strength, endurance and flexibility. Swimming skills are not required. Governors ball

    OLYMPIA  The Governors Inaugural Ball will take place at the state Capitol building at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16. Everyone is invited to this event. There will be music, dancing, entertainment and food from the Washington State Chefs Association as well as a special wine made just for the ball. This years balls theme is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Temple of Justice. Crab feed

    LONG BEACH Ilwaco Sports Boosters will host their annual fundraising crab feed Saturday, Jan. 19 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge, 110 Pacific Avenue North in Long Beach. The one-crab dinner is $15 and includes French bread and coleslaw. The two-crab dinner is $25. Hot dogs are also available for $2. All money raised goes to help the sports programs at Ilwaco High School.

Beach cleanup

    PENINSULA There will be a beach cleanup event beginning at 9:30 a.m., on Jan. 19 at any major beach approach. The evening before at 4:30 p.m., clean up materials will be distributed and then at 5 p.m., a potluck with a guest speaker will be held on Jan. 18, at the Peninsula Baptist Church, 23802 Pacific Way in Ocean Park. The topic will be an update from the Department of Ecology. After the cleanup there will be a volunteers soup feed at the Ocean Park Moose Lodge at 25915 U Street.

Windless kites festival

    LONG BEACH  Its time for the annual windless kites festival showcasing the amazing talents of Scott Davis and Toby Arnt in the Long Beach Elementary School gymnasium at 400 S. Washington Street. Flying will happen from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 19 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Jan. 20. Living history program

    ASTORIA  Lewis and Clark National Historical Park presents a special living history program on Saturday, Jan. 19 and Sunday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. During this two-day Wintering Over event, visitors are encouraged to converse with expedition members (portrayed by first-person character interpreters) camped at their Fort Clatsop winter headquarters in 1806. Visitors will start with a brief orientation that will introduce the story of the Corps of Discovery and prepare them to participate in the program. In addition to this event at the fort, there are movies in the visitor center theater that will be offered each hour. Cheerleading clinic

    ILWACO As part of her senior project Keiana Yasanaka is hosting a cheerleading clinic in the old high school cafeteria on the Black Lake complex. Camp dates are Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., with a performance date set for Jan. 25. The cost is $28 per participant, which includes the clinic and a T-shirt. Old Time Loggers Reunion

    NASELLE  Appelo Archives Center at 1056 State Route 4 in Naselle, is pleased to sponsor the third annual Old Time Loggers Reunion on Saturday, Jan. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. This event is intended to bring together loggers of all ages and their families, as well as community members who want to honor the logging industrys history in the Lower Columbia. Everyone who was, or still is, involved in the timber industry is encouraged to come. While there is no cost to attend, they always appreciate a donation to the center.

Peninsula Has Talent

    ILWACO  Dust off your dancing shoes and tune up that tuba, it is time for the Peninsula Players annual Peninsula Has Talent competition and a chance to compete for the prize of $250. There will be a number of performers and local celebrity judges. Come to the preliminary judging on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 1 at the River City Playhouse at 127 Lake Street SE in Ilwaco. Girls Circle

    SEAVIEW The Boys & Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula is proud to announce Girls Circle Facilitator Training to be held Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview. The club was awarded a millage grant in winter 2012, allowing the training to come to the Peninsula. Girls Circle is a program that promotes healthy relationships and resiliency for girls ages 9 to18 in a safe space. This program is vital to the livelihoods of local girls and young women, providing activities that help strengthen and build relationships, body image and healthy habits. The training is free to Pacific County residents and lasts from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both days. The training provides the foundation to be hired to facilitate the program, which will potentially happen four times throughout the year, once during the summer and three times during the school year.
