Tsunami debris response plan

    SEAVIEW The Washington State Marine Debris Task Force is holding a community meeting to answer questions and gather feedback about the state plan for responding to marine debris from the tragic March 11, 2011, Japan tsunami that may cross the Pacific Ocean and reach Washington beaches. The local meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place in Seaview. The response plan is designed to address high-impact types of debris, such as a large dock or debris containing hazardous materials like oil, as well as a potential steady influx of small non-hazardous debris. The task force collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to develop the plan. Public hearing

    LONG BEACH At 10 a.m., on Dec. 5, there will be a public hearing in the county administrative facility at 7013 Sandridge Road regarding the purposed change of the Lions Paw Inn in Seaview to a community child shelter program for young males referred by DSHS.

Meet the CEO

    ILWACO The public is invited to come meet the new chief executive officer of Ocean Beach Hospital. Kendall Sawa will be available from        2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 5 in the hospital lobby.     ILWACO Peninsula Players is hosting three one-act plays at the River City Playhouse at 127 Lake Street S.E., in Ilwaco at 7 p.m., on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 9. The first is Misdeeds at Mistletoe Mine or Sanity Clause, written by Tim Koenig, directed by Robert Lindberg, assisted by Patrick Gore. Christmas bazaar

    RAYMOND  There will be a Christmas Bazaar on Friday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Pacific County Senior Center, 324 Jackson Street in Raymond. Vendors include: Paparazzi, It Works, Tastefully Simple, Creepy Beautiful, Mary Irwin Watercolors as well as local  crafters that make jewelry, leather goods, baked goodies and candies. Come have a hot cup of spiced tea and check out the vendors. Lunch will be served at 11:45 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will include spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and dessert. Grange auction

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Grange is holding an auction on Dec. 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at 5715 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Symphony performs

    CHINOOK Beginning at 3 p.m., on Dec. 8, at the Chinook School gymnasium, Columbia River Symphony will perform an old-fashioned Christmas concert. Admission is just $10, with children under age 12 admitted free. This is a great opportunity to enjoy incredible music to get everyone into the holiday spirit. Plus there will be a bake sale, Christmas tree raffle ($1 per ticket), gift basket raffle ($1 per ticket), and free cocoa, hot apple cider and coffee. Attendees should bring a non-perishable food item for the local food bank. This is a benefit concert to help raise funds for the restoration of the old Chinook school.

Wood carving demo

    OCEAN PARK On Dec. 8, from noon to 3 p.m., Athol Libby will demonstrate his woodcarving techniques at Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park. Athol will discuss using knives and chisels to create unique artworks. Come meet this artist and watch him create handcarved Santas and angels. The public is welcome. Christmas trees for sale

    ILWACO Ilwaco High School Jazz Band is selling Christmas trees every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the old high school. All are fresh cut nobles (cut Thanksgiving Day). The price is $30 for 4 ft. to 5 ft. trees; $40 for 5 ft. to 6 ft. trees; and $50 for trees 7 ft. to 8 ft. and up. Ocean Park library closed

    OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park Timberland Library will be closed for approximately three weeks. The library is expected to re-open to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The outdoor book drop will stay open during the library closure. The project includes an addition to the back (south) side of the library expanding the interior space from 3,240 to 5,292 square feet. The highlights of the project will be new and larger quiet reading areas, a separate teen space, a larger childrens area, more computers, additional shelving, lighting for the shelving and new furnishings, carpet and paint.

    PENINSULA Two local inns will participate in the annual holiday bed and breakfast and open house and food drive from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 8 and Dec. 9. Tuba Christmas

    ILWACO Everyone is invited to attend the free tuba Christmas concert at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 9. Enjoy traditional and jazz versions of Christmas standards performed by the Astoria Tuba Quartet at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 Lake Street in Ilwaco. Eagles Christmas party

    OCEAN PARK  Ocean Park Eagles will be hosting a Christmas party for children of all ages in the community. The party will be held on Sunday Dec. 9 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., at the Ocean Park Lodge located at 1409 Bay Ave. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Tour of homes

    NASELLE The annual Finnish American Folk Festival Concert and Tour of Homes will be held Sunday, Dec. 9. The concert will begin at         1 p.m. at the historic Deep River Pioneer Lutheran Church, featuring the Naselle Kanteles, soloists Lisa Bighill and Karen Nelson, Cooley-Wolfe Singers and Ringers, and the Finn-Am Choir. Anna Ehrlund will again tell the history of the church, which is over 100 years old, and has retained its original features. The concert will close with traditional Christmas carols. Three local homes will be open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Tickets with maps are $5 each and benefit the Finn Am Fest. They will be available at the concert and at Hair Villa in Naselle, at Finn Ware in Astoria and at Radio Shack in Seaview, or any of the featured homes. Featured homes will be marked by signage and balloons. A variety of soups will be served by the Priscilla Circle of Naselle Lutheran Church, 308 Knappton Rd, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This delicious tradition is the perfect way to end your day.

Book fair

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Elementary is hosting a scholastic book fair from Dec. 10 through Dec. 14. The book fair helps raise funds to purchase new books for the school library. Dec. 10 will be a view day from     10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Tuesday, Dec. 11 through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to   4 p.m., being purchasing days. Shedore family donations

    PENINSULA Donations are still being accepted at any branch of the Bank of The Pacific. The Shedores have had more than their share of strife of late, with the complicated pregnancy of the twins, Lilly and Forrest, then Mike being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease), and finally with their fishing boat, the Two Mikes, sinking off the Newport Jetty. Mikes condition has deteriorated so any help would be welcomed.

LB fun events

    LONG BEACH Long Beach Elementary School has a canned/boxed food drive underway. There is a competition between the upstairs and downstairs to bring the most food to be donated, with the ASB supplying an ice cream party to the winner. Also the sixth grade class is recycling Christmas tree lights. Please drop off all of your unwanted Christmas lights (the ones that dont work or the ones that are in such a mess you would rather throw them away than untangle them) to Long Beach Elementary School. They will be recycled as a fundraiser for an end of the year field trip.

Surf Rescue Benefit

    LONG BEACH On Dec. 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., dont miss the Asian extravaganza buffet and sushi bar dinner to benefit the South Pacific County Technical Rescue Surf Rescue Team. Wiegardt painting raffle

    LONG BEACH  The Canoe by Eric Wiegardt is being sold by raffle tickets, with the drawing to be held at 7 p.m., on Dec. 19 at the Long Beach fire hall. Tickets are $5 each, with only 1,000 total tickets available. The print is valued at $1,200 and is 22×30 in size. Caregivers support

        LONG BEACH The caregiver support group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the PUD auditorium at 9610 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. ABCs of Diabetes

Toys for Tots drive

    PENINSULA  Jennifer Vedenoja of Pacific County Fire District No. 1 and local U.S. Marine Corps Reserve members John and Bobbie Hoechlin, are collecting toys and gifts to be distributed locally to kids who may not otherwise have a Christmas gift to open this year. Businesses, organizations and community members are welcome to help in the effort by donating new, unwrapped toys at selected drop off sites. Toys for Tots donation drop boxes for new, unwrapped toys are at: All Seasons Kidstuff in Chinook; Bank of Pacific in Ilwaco; the Chinook Observer office, the Bank of Pacific, Dennis Company, KeyBank, and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Long Beach; Peninsula Senior Center in Klipsan; and Bank of Pacific and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Ocean Park. Once Toys for Tots coordinators collect the donations, specific local agencies, such as Head Start, the Elks and Eagles lodges, and PCFD No. 1, help them to distribute the gifts to select lists of needy kids ages one through 16. Help is especially needed to find gifts for the older kids around 12 to 16 years old. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity; all toy and monetary donations are tax-deductible. Checks made out to Toys for Tots may be mailed to P.O.     KLIPSAN  Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game the second Thursday of each month starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. The next game is Dec. 13. Winter heating help

    PACIFIC COUNTY The low-income home energy assistance program is starting soon. Coastal Community Action Program will open phone lines Thursday, Dec. 13, and begin making appointments. Appointments can also be made online at www.coastalcap.org. The program provides financial assistance to help income eligible households make home heating more affordable. If you live in the Raymond/South Bend area, you can call 942-5739 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment. Ilwaco food bank

    ILWACO Ilwaco food bank will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. The food bank is located on Lake Street, across from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum parking lot.

Clamming

    PENINSULA The next razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Bayside Singers Christmas Concert

    CHINOOK  The Bayside Singers, directed by Barbara Poulshock, will present a performance of their annual Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m., at the Fort Columbia Theatre in Chinook.  The concert, featuring traditional and contemporary holiday music, is jointly sponsored with the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA). Admission and parking for the event to be held in the Fort Columbia Theater near the entrance gate is free. However, a cash donation collected at the door will be distributed to local Peninsulas organizations serving the needy.

Childrens Christmas party

    OCEAN PARK  The Women of the Moose are hosting their annual Childrens Christmas Party on Dec. 15, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the lodge in Ocean Park. All children from our Peninsula are welcome when attended by an adult. Santa and Mrs. Claus will listen to the childrens Christmas lists. There will be food, fun and all free. Hope to see you there! Christmas Concert

    OCEAN PARK  The Bayside Singers, under the direction of Barbara Poulshock, will present their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church located at 240th and U Street.  The concert, featuring traditional and contemporary holiday music, is jointly sponsored with the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists. Admission is free, however cash donations will be welcome to distribute to local Peninsula organizations serving the needy .
